Mrs. Ruth Rochester, a beloved mother and grandmother, passed away on Monday, 15 Iyar, 5782.
She was 75.
Ruth was born in and grew up in Baltimore. She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Michigan and a Master’s degree in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling from Syracuse University.
She came from a family of doctors, her father Milton was one of the first Jews to be admitted to Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and her brother Marvin was a Professor of Thoracic Surgery at the University of Michigan. Ruth could have been a doctor – she knew almost the entire Merck Manual.
Ruth worked for many years in the Special School District as a psychological examiner, devoting herself to helping children. Upon retirement, she trained herself to create beautiful jewelry at Craft Alliance and displayed her work at Artisans in the Loop and Missouri Artists on Main. She was a brilliant artist who won many awards.
But most importantly, she cherished her nine grandchildren and nothing made her happier than to be with them.
Contributions in her memory may be made to the Heart Association or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
She is survived by her husband, Marty Rochester; and children Shaya Rochester (Marisa) – Crown Heights, and Sean Rochester (Carolyn); and grandchildren Leah, Mendy, Sara, Sholom, Raya, Elie, Yossi, Lottie, and Samantha.
She is also survived by her brother Lee Kirsh.
