Mrs. Hindy Scheiman, a beloved and dedicated Chabad Shlucha and school teacher in Illinois, has passed away on Tuesday, Iyar 27 5773, leaving a large Chabad family.
She was 54 and suffered from an illness.
Together with her husband, Rabbi Binyomin Scheiman, she founded Chabad & FREE of Niles, an active synagogue and Jewish center in the Des Plaines suburb of Chicago.
It began in the basement of their home in 1987 and attracted Jews from the area until 1990 when they purchased a ranch home at Emerson and Margail that is now a full-service shul that meets daily and holds several classes and services.
Being a branch of Friends of Refugees of Eastern Europe (FREE), they helped many immigrants from the former Soviet Union settle in and attended to their physical and spiritual needs.
While Rabbi Scheiman served as a full-time Jewish prison chaplain, Mrs. Scheiman worked as a teacher in the Lubavitch School of Chicago, where parents remember her as “kind, giving and dedicated to her shlichus, family and her students.”
She is survived by her husband and their children: Mrs. Faigy Lison – Montreal, Canada; Rabbi Schneur Scheiman – Des Plaines, IL; Mrs. Henny Brandman – Buckhurst Hill, UK; Chaim Scheiman, Mendel Scheiman, Mushka Scheiman, Shterni Scheiman and Leibel Scheiman – Des Plaines, IL.
She is also survived by her parents R’ Azriel and Shifra Schanowitz of Crown Heights and her 11 siblings: Rabbi Yosef Schanowitz – Highland Park, IL; Rabbi Meir Schanowitz – Skokie, IL; Mrs. Leah Engel – Denver, CO; Mrs. Shterna Edelman – Burnoy, France; Mrs. Rivkah Vogel – San Jose, CA; R’ Levi Schanowitz – Crown Heights; Mrs. Rochel Polter – Oak Park, MI; Rabbi Shmuel Schanowitz – Buffalo, NY; Rabbi Yisroel Schanowitz – Las Vegas, NV; Rabbi Chaim Schanowitz – San Deigo, CA; and Mrs. Nechama Dina Gansburg – Aubervilliers, France.
LEVAYA and SHIVA
The levaya will take place Tuesday 9:30 PM at Cheder Lubavitch located at 5201 W. Howard in Skokie, IL.
In New York, the levaya will take place Wednesday at Shomrei Hadas Chapels at 1:00 PM and pass by Lubavitch Headquarters 770 Eastern Parkway at 2:00 PM, on its way to burial at Old Montefiore cemetery in Queens.
The family will be sitting shiva on Wednesday, after levaya until 7:00 PM, at the home Rabbi Mendel Scheiman at 770 Empire #5L in Brooklyn. From Thursday morning until Tuesday morning, at the Scheiman home 9263 Hamlin, Des Plaines, IL.
The Schanowitz family will be sitting shiva at 686 Montgomery Street.

Hindy ~ I remember you … do you remember me ? You made an impact on my life. In your quiet way. You were always davening – wherever & whenever you could. I was 14 – you were a few years older. Once I bought you a siddur because I thought a siddur could be used up – but, I know better now. Hashem hears our prayers even & especially from torn/tattered siddurim !!! My prayers go out to your family & Shternie my once classmate. Your loss is great. May your neshama be forever uplifted with all the kindness… Read more »
Hindy and her family lived above us in Brooklyn. We were friends and played together when I lived on Montgomery Street.. She was a fine and moral child and a true friend. The Shanowitz family were the best neighbors. Sadly, we left CH and lost touch. It is no surprise to me that she wound up engaging in acts of chesed.Condolences to the family.
My condolences to you and your family for the loss of your sister Hindy.Enventhough I did not know her, I know she was blessed, along with everyone in the community of Las Vegas,Nevada, that you and your family have helped with your dedication & passion at the Desert Shores Chabad; Please Hashem, Health and Happiness only for you & yours , and us all. It was so shocking to hear about Hindy. I’ve known Hindy for many years and know that she was truly a tzaddakis. IY”H she’ll help bring Moshiach now!

I’m sooo sad!
She prepared the first Kosher Shabbat meal I ever had. I’ve always said I went back two weeks later for the soup. 23 years later I am observant and have my own family. The gates of Heaven are crowded with true giants. SP
we shouldn’t have any more tzoros
Hindy
What a wonderful aunt you were,
I remember the time when you came to our house when i was ten or soo when my mother was away. I remember when you read to us stories. My heart is acking and I want to cry. Why did you, such a wonderful,
amazing Tzadakis have to leave this world? Only Hashem can answer that,
May the Geula come speadily so we can see each other once again.
Hashem, this really hurts. He took our creme of the crop from us. Our tzadekes, our leader, our good amongst us. Hindy, dont leave us alone for long!! Bring Moshiach!!!!! NOW PLEASE!!!

You always had time to speak to me, even when you were weak..
If i ever left a message, my calls were returned .
Your wisdom and advice was priceless.
I could go on and on .
I know you are going to bang on the AIBISHTER DOORS DEMANDING MOSHIACH NOW.

Its like the semayim is crying too.
she was my teacher many years ago and i allways loved going to school she was the best of the best..
to have top quality people teaching our kids. Hindy Scheiman’s love and devotion to our kids helped give them a love for aleph beis, a love for yiddishkeit & a love for mitzvos. And for that we are eternaly grateful. Hindy, thank you for sharing so much of yourself with our children.
I must agree with #18 – please don’t generalize or sound negative. I know you are in pain but please read what everyone is writing about her. There is no way to put everything that was HINDY into a small paragraph. She was so very special in so many ways. Put everyone’s comments together and you can get a taste of what she was like. But I suppose it still doesn’t do her justice. There aren’t enough words to describe her or to describe our pain at this tragic loss. May her family be comforted. We will all miss her… Read more »
Bli Neder, I will continue to be crazy for the Rebbe and G-d, doing outlandish things to bring Moshiach in this sometimes heart-crushing Midbar, trying to emulate your spirit and style, as I know you well, and to help bring a quick reunification. YRS
Thank you for doing something positive in her memory

I am so sorry that I was unable to offer any comfort during this time. Hindy always made me feel like I was the most important person in the room. She welcomed me like a sister. My children were named in her basement 25 years ago. I will miss you.
Hindy, OBM, had the power to unite the entire Chicago community. What was done in her merit these past few weeks is a taste of Moshiach days. Her special husband is also beloved by everyone,
Their daughter’s wedding shower last night turned instead to a levaya. Ad mosai!
Thirty plus years of shlichus, chinuch, role modelling. Chazak Chazak beloved Scheiman family.
On the shiloshim of another great Shliach R’ Lipa Dubrowsky AD MOSAI!!!!!!
A dear friend and colleague, Hindy was assistant teacher in pre 1-A for longer than I can remember. Hindy probably taught every boy and girl in Cheder how to read Hebrew. She was the kindest person I have ever known. I have never, ever heard anyone say a bad word about Hindy, in fact I can’t even fathom that it would ever occur to anyone to ever have a negative thought about her. When I taught in Cheder, often along side Hindy, I observed she had endless patience with the children, never demeaned them, she encouraged, she corrected with kindness… Read more »
I remember her, just this past summer, in Gan Yisroel. She was always there to help with running camp activities, or campers. I had no idea she was sick for a long time. It was so schocking! We’ve been saying tehillim for her for a while now.
May Hashem bring comfort to her family.
This is terrible news! Ad mosai!!!!!
Stay strong Shternie!!!!!!!!
We love you!

Just can’t believe it, what an amazing woman!
I remember hearing from my mother how she was such an amazing woman, such great middos, and she never wanted to hear any lashon hara from anybody.
Moshiach please come right now!
Shloshim will be in la week. Yom tov cuts it short.
Henny, I hope you and your family are comforted in this trying and difficult time. May your family only have simchas…
~ A former classmate
My heart goes out to her parents. The sweetest people. HaShem should give you, and all her family and community, the strength to overcome this great tragedy. The night is always darkest right before dawn. Hashem please bring us Moshiach now.
She will be greatly missed. She was so accepting and so caring. She always made me feel welcome. Condolences to her family. May her memory always be a blessing.
Ad Mosai! What does the aibeshter want???
Shifra Schanowitz and her husband raised a beautiful family. All the children in that family are special. Hindy was a Eidel, kind and chassideshe woman.
Noone even has a clue on how special she was.
Whatever we know is a glimpse of who this most special neshama was.
May we be united with her with the coming of moshiach now!
Please visit http://www.jpafil.org/ and give something to help this special family.
A REAL Tzadekes. Pure Emunah, Real Simcha and Bitachon. Yarei Shamayim- Kept every detail of kasrus to its entirety. An akeres Habayis, Phenomenal dedicated teacher, shlucha camp mother. We need Moshiach, only answer.
Mrs. Scheiman was a true Tzadekes. Ich varf nisht mit titulim. She could always be seen going from class to class on the day of anyone in the community’s simcha, distributing nickels for the children to give to Tzedaka.
She should be a gutte beter…
Piha psha b chachmo and alway bsever paim yafos!!! A TZADEKES SO HUMBLE. I learned so much from her.
She once stayed in my home with her husband, she was up very early and learning with her husband.
Emese chasidishe women.
AD MOSI
No child was too difficult to teach. She loved every child as her own. She will be a gute beterin for all children
I do not think that I know the depth of this holy woman, having only lived here for 6 years, but my heart is aching. She taught 4 of my children to read hebrew at cheder lubavitch, in her brilliant and loving way. My 9-year old was bawling at the news of Morah Scheiman who taught her at age 5, and has questions for Hashem. Aside from all that was mentioned above, one thing that stands out for me was that whenever I spoke to her, I felt like I was someone very special to her, almost singled out. You… Read more »
Please share more about her. I would love to hear more about the special woman she was. Boruch dayan haemes. May these shared memories bring comfort to her family and community.

I take upon myself, to learn the entire Mishnayos of Seder Nizikin by her Shloshim, Lilui Nishmasa.
Her sisters are married to Rabbi Engel from Denver, Rabbi Aidelman from Brunoy, Rabbi Vogel from S. Jose California, Rabbi Polter from Detroit and Rabbi Gansburg from Aubervilleis.
May they all be consoled with Moshiach Tzidkeinu Bimheiro Vyameinu Amen
She was a hidden tzadekes!!!
WHAT A PITY THAT THE READERSHIP OF THIS WEBSITE HAS NO CLUE WHAT THIS GIANT OF A WOMEN HINDY WAS Why generalize, or write with a negative tone? Many of us knew Hindy and knew what a wonderful, special, and humble person she was. I am a good friend of one of her siblings and spent many shabbos afternoons at their home. ALL of Rabbi & Mrs. Shanowitz’s children are the type to go out of their way for another person and do whatever has to be done – in their quiet unassuming beautiful way – just like their special… Read more »

No words.
Rabbi Yisroel & Shternie Schanowitz, Las Vegas Shluchim, brother and sister in law, you are in our thoughts and prayers.
I feel like crying, this is such sad news. Baruch dayan haemes
HINDY IS SO MUCH MORE THAN A SWEET CARING PERSON. SHE WAS BRILLIANT,SHARP WITH TREMENDOUS INSIGHT INTO HUMAN BEINGS. SHE WOULD TRAVEL 4 AM TO PICK UP A TEENAGER HOOKED ON DRUGS WHO WOULD CALL WITHOUT EVEN GIVING THEIR NAME,AND BRING THEM HOME. HINDY AND BINYAMIN WOULD FEED CRIMINALS AND BE THERE FOR THEM. FOR YEARS I WOULD SAY THAT SHE SHOULD BE THE KEYNOTE SPEAKER AT THE KINUS, BUT THE WORLD DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO APPRECIATE REAL GADLUS. I AM SURE ALL THE SIBLINGS KNOW WHO THIS IS WRITING AND I AM HEARTBROKEN FOR YOU ALL. THERE ARE… Read more »
