Mrs. Hennie Sufrin, co-founder of Chabad Lubavitch centres in N. E. London and Essex in England who was loved by all in Ilford, passed away Thursday, Av 4 5770.
She was 76 years old.
Simply known as “Hennie,” her listening ear and helping hand were legendary and she was seen as the matriarch of the North-East London and Essex Jewish community.
Henne Elke Sufrin was born in Dublin, Ireland, where her parents, R’ Chanoch Henoch and Mrs. Wolfson, were active members of the Jewish community, often hosting the shochtim and other visiting frum Jews.
After learning in the known Gateshead Seminary Beth Midrash Lemoroth, the women’s teacher training college, she married Rabbi Aron Dov Sufrin in Manchester and moved to London.
Legendary chossid and Shliach Rabbi Benzion Shemtov, in charge of building Chabad-Lubavitch throughout the UK, approached them to get involved.
A short while later, Rabbi AD Sufrin became the Director of Education and member of the board of Lubavitch UK (working alongside Rabbi Nachman Sudak and Rabbi Faivish Vogel.)
Mrs. Sufrin held a teaching position in the Lubavitch Girls High School for a number of years and head-teacher for some of those years as well.
In 1976 with the Rebbe’s blessings they moved to Ilford, Essex, home to 30,000 Jews, where they opened their home to all.
“They moved during the days when it was unfashionable to be outside of anywhere other than Stamford Hill or Golders Green,” a family member told COLlive.com.
Hennie, best known for her lively open “Irish” character, led with zest numerous classes and other programs for women throughout the week.
One of her most cherished projects was her Tuesday Morning Ladies Sem where she would organize different speakers on various topics to address the ladies. “The sem was her joy and pride,” the family said.
“Many in the community and beyond, used to telephone her and visit her to share their woes, seeking some “chizuk” and inspiration which they always found after contacting her.”
Their son Rabbi Aryeh Sufrin and his wife Devorah joined them in 1983 after their marriage and began the groundwork to build what is known today as the thriving Chabad Lubavitch Centre.
Since the passing of Rabbi AD Sufrin in 1997, Mrs. Hennie Sufrin has continued to play an active leading role in the education services offered by the Chabad Centre.
She is survived by her children Rabbi Aryeh Sufrin, Shliach in Ilford, Essex, UK; Mrs. Baila Hecht of Crown Heights (wife of Rabbi Shea Hecht); R’ Eli Sufrin of Florida and R’ Boruch Sufrin of California.
She is also survived by her sister, Marilyn Cohen of London.
LEVAYA AND SHIVA
The funeral will be leaving Schonfeld Square Thursday at 3:30 pm, passing by Lubavitch House (Lubavitch UK Headquarters) at 3:45 pm.
Shiva will be at the home of Rabbi Aryeh Sufrin, 15 Highwood Gardens, Ilford, Essex.

Hennie was a very special person to me. I loved her wonderful sense of fun, her tenacity and the fact that she never forgot her Irish roots. I will always remember our times together at Schonfeld Square entertaining the residents with our renditions of ‘If You’re Irish’ and ‘Molly Malone’. She was humourous, intelligent, understanding and tolerant. Our lives took very different paths but Hennie was always very accepting of my lifestyle and she never tried to impose her views or values onto me. That meant a lot to me. She has had such a positive affect on so many… Read more »

We only became privileged to get to know her when our son married your wonderful daughter. Seeing her at camp Shaloh was the highlight of our visit. Her wonderful stories about the Rebbe and England truly inspired us and we have repeated the stories countless times. “A GRAND LADY” in every aspect . She will be missed. Hashem should comfort your entire family, and you should all be reunited quickly with the coming of Moshiach.

Ilford won’t be the same without Henny. Whenever anybody mentioned Gants Hill you thought of Henny. She was “Ilford”.
Henny singing “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling” is something always to be remembered.

A special lady held dear in all our hearts. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t know Hennie. She would sing “When Irish Eyes are Smiling” to us – and hers did indeed smile. She was unique, warm, fun and taught us so much. Her legacy lives on in her children and grandchildren. We will miss her. Condolences to Eli, Baila, Aryeh, Boruch, sister Marilyn and their families.

Our families go way back to the “Dublin days” & continued in Manchester & London. Rabbi Sufrin was the point man for all Chinuch issues in Lubavitch & was the conduit to the Rebbe for many of us “young lads”. Shabbos afternoon withRabbi A.D. & Reb Henny, a Maamar Chassidus & a tall glass of tea will always be remembered ( along with R’henochs guiness !!) .Reb Hennys spirited Irish humor & positive approach to life & its issues guided us in our youth. It was always great to see her at simchas & on visits to N.Y. etc &… Read more »
I knew Hennie and her family for many years, she was a Charismatic person, with the words of wisdom, understanding, and even tough love, she was a brick to her husband OBM A.D, and her children and grand children, she will never be forgotten. I will always smile when thinking of her, especially when passing a lake as she used to say, water is a siman brocha. May she rest in peace.
To Eli, Baila, Aryeh Boruch and Aunty Mar, I wish you all a long healthy good life filled with only Simchas
I had known Henny Sufrin very well for many years, she was a larger than life character and “36l” was a home everyone knew. She and her husband Aron Dov had a lot of influence over my family. I wish her children and sister only Simchas

She will be sadly missed…a real “lady” who always had a positive word & gave over so much common sense & chizuk, especially to her many Mekaravos. It was a privilege to know her.
TO; RABBI’S, ARYEH, ELI, BORUCH & BAILA.
We are so very sad to hear of the loss of your dear mother.
Sending our condolences, for a long, happy and healthy, life, full of Simchas in the future.
Hennie was the most amazing dynamic person, I can think of;
She was our headmistress in High school, for so many years, many many years ago; She led our school in the most special way, she knew when to be ‘tough’ and when to be kind and gentle with us; She had a tremendous sense of humour, and we are left with many wonderful, heart warming memories of her; She will be very badly missed by all her ex pupils and by Chabad of London generally. A most special warm person, loved by so many;
