Mrs. Ethel Nechama Bryski, wife of the late Horav Mordechai Meir HaKohen Bryski, and matriarch of a large and prominent Lubavitcher family, passed away on Sunday night, 11 Kislev 5783.
She was 96.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, she was the eldest child and only daughter of Reb Yisroel Yosef and Baila Eckhaus, who ran a mikvah in Boro Park for many years. Ethel was introduced to her husband, Mottel Bryski, through the efforts of the legendary Chassid R’ Avrohom Paris and the strong encouragement and blessing of the Rebbe Rayatz.
Reb Mottel Bryski, the sole survivor of his large family back in Chmielnik, Poland, was a beloved member of the famed group of Temimim who spent the much of the war years in “Shanchai”.
As a steadfast partner in her husband’s quest to rebuild that which was so tragically lost during the war, Ethel exhibited tremendous devotion and self-sacrifice in raising her children.
She also volunteered extensively for various Bikur Cholim organizations, often spending long hours in hospital wards, going from to room – visiting, feeding, and bringing comfort and cheer to Jewish patients.
Many of Ethel’s children and grandchildren serve as Shluchim, educators and community leaders around the world.
Ethel Bryski is survived by her children: Eliezer HaKohen Bryski – Brooklyn, New York; Sholom Ber Hakohen Bryski – Brooklyn, New York; Yitzchok Hakohen Bryski – Brooklyn, New York; Yaakov HaKohen Bryski – Brooklyn, New York; Rochel Kohn – Brooklyn, New York; Chave Einbinder – Tarzana, California; Menachem HaKohen Bryski – Agoura Hills, California; Moshe HaKohen Bryski – Agoura Hills, California; Rivkah Katz – Los Angeles, California; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is also survived by her brother, Rabbi Yaakov Moshe Eckhaus.
She was predeceased by her husband, Horav Mordechai Meir HaKohen Bryski and brother, Avraham Simcha Eckhaus.
