Mrs. Edith Cohen, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away on 5 Tishrei, 5779.
She was 96.
Mrs. Cohen was born in New York on December 16th, 1921. She married Jack Cohen OBM, and they lived in the Sheepshead Bay neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York.
Mrs. Cohen was admired for her personal and warm interaction with everyone she met, showing exceptional interest in the lives of those close to her and strangers alike.
Throughout her years, Mrs. Cohen was devoted to the well-being of the Jewish community in Sheepshead Bay, many times going above and beyond her responsibilities towards strengthening the foundations of Jewish life. Through her family, she was a familiar and appreciated woman in Crown Heights.
Having lived through the Great Depression, Word War II and witnessing the influx of Jews to New York following the Holocaust, Mrs. Cohen was dedicated to the upbringing of a strong Jewish family.
She is survived by her children, Gail Cohen and Shlomo Cohen of Crown Heights, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, many of whom live in Crown Heights and other communities in the US and South Africa.
The Levaya will take place today, Sunday, at 11:30 am at New Montefiore Cemetery in Queens.
Shiva will be at 440 Brooklyn Ave Apt #3G.

Clearly Mrs. Cohen was a remarkable, communally-active woman in her native Sheepshead Bay for many years. She raised a fine Yiddishe family when Yiddishkeit wasn’t flourishing in america in the mid-20’th century. Touching too is her sensitivity to others – whether talking to the in-crowd or the stranger. May we all follow her example of fealty to Yiddishkeit and warmth to all others.
May her family be comforted by Hashem, and continue in the big shoes she filled before them.
