Rebbetzin Yehudis (Edith) Bloch, a dynamic teacher who founded many projects including Mesibos Shabbos gatherings for girls, passed away on Thursday, 28 Kislev, 5780.
She was 91.
She was the daughter of the chosid Rabbi Elia Nachum Sklar, born in Israel and immigrated to the US with her family when her parents were sent here by the Frierdike Rebbe.
From a young age, Edith displayed leadership qualities, organizing the very first Mesibos Shabbos for girls. The Frierdiker Rebbe once wrote about her – when she was only 12 years old – to Rabbi Zalman Hecht of Chicago, telling him to get advice from the 12-year-old girl on how to run a Mesibas Shabbos.
She was a teacher in Bais Rivkah Talmud Torah, was a head counselor in Camp Galila, and later became a Chumash Teacher at Beis Yaakov of Brownsville.
She was involved in many different organizations, the founder of Toys for Hospitalized Kids and founder of the girls’ Mesibos Shabbos. She was active with the elderly as well, serving as Director at Sholom Senior Center and hosting Chanukah parties in nursing homes.
As the founder of the Friday Night Women’s Oneg Shabbos Torah Study Group, she organized speakers for the Friday night shiurim for women in Crown Heights for over 50 years.
Her Hachnosas Orchim was legendary, hosting many bochurim for meals on Shabbos, her basement being lined wall to wall with cots for guests to sleep.
She was famously known as being the Shadchan for Rabbi JJ and Rebbetzin Chava Hecht.
She is survived by her son Yaakov (Yanky) Bloch of Los Angeles, and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews who will miss her hashpo’oh greatly.
She is also survived by her brother Moshe Sklar – Borough Park and sister Chana Levy – Monsey, NY.
She was predeceased by her husband Rabbi Avraham Aba Bloch and her daughter Devorah Nechoma Neuwirth. She was also predeceased by her sisters Leah Block of Ontario, Canada obm and Shayna Lerner of Washington Heights obm.
The Levaya will take place tomorrow, Friday, passing by 770 at 9:45/10:00 am.

Hachnosas Orchim is a meaningful mitzvah to be remembered by.
Didn’t just talk. A real doer. But her divrei Torah were also something special at the Friday night oneg Shabbos shiur that she organized for over 50 years, to which she brought speakers from all over. A mixture of intellect and common sense with real heart and a big smile. This is so sad, she will be missed so much.

She would make us laugh and cry and deepen our understanding of who the Rebbe was, all while standing in fron of the ohel bus as it rocked and swayed through the streets on its way to the ohel and back. Always a highlight of the convention! Oh I will miss your strength, your light, your love!!
