Mrs. Chana Fradil Boymelgreen, matriarch of a Chabad family, passed away on Sunday evening, 3 Nissan, 5782.
She was 97.
Chana Fradil was born in 1925 in Lodz into a prominent family that were Alexander Chassidim.
Her father, R’ Yeshaya Shlomo Altman, was known for his wisdom, and many reached out to him for advice.
She was a student of Sara Schenirer at the Beis Yaakov in Lodz.
During the war, when her family was locked up in the Lodz ghetto, her ingenuity and courage helped her family avoid the early transfers to the death camps.
Eventually, the Altman family was transported to Auschwitz, where her entire family, including both her parents, perished. The only ones to survive were Chana and her two sisters.
After the liberation, Chana was active with relief organizations in searching for and extracting Jewish children that were hidden in non-Jewish homes. Here again, she used her wit and bravery in returning children to their parents.
She met her husband Reb Mordechai Boymelgreen, himself a single survivor of his entire family, in a DP camp. Reb Mordechai was a talmid of Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin and of Tomchei Temimim in Otvotzk. They got married in Israel in 1946 and lived in Petach Tikvah where they were active members of the local Chabad Shul.
She is survived by her children, R’ Levi Yitzchok Boymelgreen, R’ Shaya Boymelgreen – Crown Heights and Rachel Chitrik – Crown Heights.
