Mr. Dovid Richler, an active member of the Chabad community in Montreal and benefactor of many Chabad mosdos in both Montreal and Toronto, Canada, passed away on Shabbos, 10 Tammuz, 5776.
He was 88.
Mr. Richler was the first student of Tomchei Temimim Lubavitch in Montreal in 1941 and was very active in the Jewish and Lubavitch community in Montreal.
He was the benefactor in the building of the main Mikvah in Montreal and was very active in its construction and operation, serving as the Mikvah’s president for many years.
He also helped build several Shuls and was an early supporter of Camp Gan Yisroel in Montreal.
He later moved to Toronto where he continued to assist and volunteer for many great causes, in particular Zareinu, an Educational Center for children with physical and developmental challenges.
He is fondly remembered by many as being the candy-man in the main Lubavitch Shul in Montreal, and after he moved to Toronto in the Agudah South Shul.
He is survived by his wife Goldie (Toronto), and children, Shmarya Richler (Montreal), Hertzie Richler (Los Angeles), Malka Jakubovic (Toronto) and Baila Kuhnreich (Toronto) as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren including some who serve as Shluchim of the Rebbe.

He was the candy man in shul. Only if he knew you should you get a second candy. I was friends with his daughter Baila and went to their house many times and stayed there too when my parents would go away for a few days. BDE
I remember him as the candyman in Montreal Yeshiva 35/40 years ago.. A kind man. Boruch Dayan hoemes
I remember him as a child- always with a broad smile on his face – twinkling eyes. He was the candyman who distributed his sweet goods with an equal amount of sweetness and goodness.
May his dear family be comforted for this loss. He is leaving a big void.
Yehi Zichro Boruch.
Hé loved everyone and everyone loved him. He was the life of the party.
Mechel and Faigie
One of my favorite people when growing up in Montreal.
Always a smile. Always a good joke and always candies for the kids
RIP Reb Dovid
Reb Dovid was the true definition of a gentleman.. A true Bal Chesed, along with his Aishes Chayil YLC”T Goldie.
Many fond memories from the minyonim in their house to accommodate his shver ZTL to walking together to early Shabbos minyonim. A truly REGAL couple.
The family should have only Simchas & share in his great memories.
Barry & Bracha
Moshiach now!!
The candy man can. Yes those sweet memories.
R’ Dovid was a highly respected member of the Montreal community, he was known as a wise person , a giving person , a leader & an all around mentsch, with a smile & a twinkle in his eyes , young & old felt in him a freind& a confidant.
His legacy lives on with his very fine children & grandchildren, may he be a gutte better for hisfamily& klal yisroel
Moshiach NOW
that in itself is a straight ticket to Gan Eden
With great sadness, and one that can testify to a great man, Reb Dovid Richier, was a kind loving person ,loved and beloved by all, not only as the “candy man” in Lubavitch in Montreal…. but with “candy” and niceness to all..
Quiet unassuming a roidef Tzedokah, and a Bal Chesed to old and young alike..
He will certainly be Melitz Yoisher for his whole family,
Mordecai Caplan
Enough with the terrible news! We need moshiach to come now!-
What a regal and dignified man. BDE
What a beautiful couple. Montreal definitely missed them when they left.
