This week, the talmidim of the Mechina program at Cheder Chabad of Monsey were privileged to take part in a unique, hands-on safrus experience that brought the world of STA”M (Sifrei Torah, Tefillin, and Mezuzos) to life in an unforgettable way.
We were honored to welcome Rabbi Dovid Krautwirth, a renowned traveling sofer who shares his passion and expertise with schools and communities around the world. With his suitcase of rare and fascinating safrus items, Rabbi Krautwirth captivated our talmidim from the very start. Among the many incredible artifacts he displayed were antique mezuzos, samples of parshiyos in various stages of writing, and even the world’s smallest tefillin—a true marvel of craftsmanship and kedushah!
Throughout the presentation, the talmidim were deeply engaged, listening intently as Rabbi Krautwirth explained the many intricate halachos and spiritual intentions that govern the work of a sofer. He emphasized the holiness and precision required in every single letter, and the incredible responsibility that comes with writing Hashem’s Name.
One of the highlights of the visit was when the boys had the opportunity to closely examine real mezuzos and try their hand at spotting mistakes—just like a sofer or magi’ah (checker) would. This interactive activity sparked thoughtful discussion and a new appreciation for the care that goes into every kosher mezuzah and tefillin.
The presentation wasn’t just informative—it was deeply inspiring. It gave our talmidim a deeper understanding of mitzvos they perform daily and a greater appreciation for the mesorah and meticulous dedication that keeps Torah scrolls, tefillin, and mezuzos kosher and full of kedushah.
We are so grateful to Rabbi Krautwirth for sharing his time, talent, and passion with our students. This memorable experience gave our talmidim a glimpse into the holy world of safrus—and left them inspired, educated, and spiritually uplifted.
