Motherhood is a precious and beautiful journey, a sacred partnership with Hashem in bringing life into the world. Yet even this holy work can feel lonely without the right support. The early years of motherhood are often filled with sleepless nights, endless giving, and moments of both joy and exhaustion. And for those without a mother’s house, sister, or grandmother nearby, the journey can feel especially isolating. No mother should walk this path alone. This belief is the heartbeat of Miriam’s Motherhood Center in Crown Heights—a warm, welcoming haven where women find not only practical resources but also deep connection and friendship.
The vision for Miriam’s Motherhood Center began in the mind of Mushka Leiter after she created the virtual group Mothers of Crown Heights eight years ago. The online platform became a lifeline for mothers seeking advice, information, and solidarity. But behind the posts and messages, Mushka saw a deeper need—one that could only be met in person. Mushka and Chaim Leiter found the perfect space to open a brick-and-mortar destination. Muhka shares, “It was a dream to create an actual building just for mothers and their babies. We needed something centrally located but big enough to accommodate crowds and stroller access.” After the pair found a space, Mushka worked with designers and poured her heart into every detail. Four years later, the dream of a physical space became a reality, lovingly dedicated to Mrs. Miriam Friedman, a Yiddishe mama whose legacy of kindness lives on in every corner of the center.
Walking into Miriam’s Motherhood Center feels like stepping into a spa designed just for mothers. Rows of potted plants line the entrance, and sunlight streams through large windows. Artwork—much of it donated by mothers—fills the walls, depicting tender moments of motherhood. The thoughtful layout invites both comfort and connection, with ample stroller parking and spacious play areas that make mothers feel instantly at ease. The message is clear from the moment you arrive: You belong here. You are not alone.
The baby playroom is the beating heart of the center. Growth Strategist Rifky Gremont, a former classroom teacher, describes the child-centered space. “We want children to be able to choose something very easily, to be able to just sit and focus on their play,” she says. The spacious playroom is separated into thoughtful areas for babies and toddlers, it’s designed to give mothers a place to breathe while their children play. Plush rugs and soft toys create a soothing space for infants, while toddlers race on tricycles, dress up in costumes, or swing on the play equipment.
Comfortable seating lines the perimeter, inviting mothers to sit, chat, and form friendships—often the very friendships that will sustain them through the highs and lows of early motherhood.
Down the hall, the Mothers’ Lounge offers a quieter space for nursing, chatting, or simply sipping a cup of coffee. The Exercise Studio hosts classes like Dancercise, toning workouts, and yoga—all with free babysitting so mothers can care for their bodies without worrying about their little ones. The space is intentionally designed to allow women to exhale—both physically and emotionally—knowing that their babies are cared for while they take a moment for themselves.
More than just a play space, Miriam’s Motherhood Center is built on the belief that mothers need holistic support—mind, body, and soul.
Program Co-ordinator Miriam Lagziel curates a range of enriching classes. “Knowledge is power,” Mushka says. “We want to provide a space for women to access valuable information.” The center features a First Aid for Moms course, childbirth education, and many shiurim. The weekly Parsha and Parenting classes bring Torah wisdom into the realities of motherhood, offering both spiritual insight and practical advice. The Taharas Hamishpacha class provides a warm and supportive environment for women to learn about family purity laws. A Mother’s Journey blends spiritual reflections with down-to-earth parenting guidance, while the Tanya and a Mother’s Journey class delves into Chassidic teachings to help mothers infuse their daily routines with meaning.
For those navigating the delicate postpartum period, the center offers fourth-trimester support groups, baby massage workshops, and CPR classes. Physical well-being is cared for with fitness classes that strengthen not only the body but the spirit. Every offering is designed with intention—because when a mother is cared for, the whole family thrives.
What sets Miriam’s Motherhood Center apart is the sense of community that blossoms within its walls. For mothers raising children in small apartments or far from family, the center becomes a second home. It’s a place where babies have room to crawl and play, where mothers can breathe deeply and know they are surrounded by a community that sees them, supports them, and walks alongside them.
The friendships formed here are not just casual acquaintances—they are lifelines. Time and again, mothers say, “My closest friends are from here.” The bond between women who share the journey of motherhood is sacred. Whether it’s a kind word during a difficult day or a warm smile from across the room, these connections remind every mother that she is never alone.
The bustling center operates entirely as a non-profit, powered by the dedication of its founders and the generosity of the community. Membership fees and fundraising efforts keep the doors open, ensuring that every mother—regardless of background or financial situation—has a place to feel supported and empowered.
The beauty of Miriam’s Motherhood Center has already sparked inspiration in other cities, with similar initiatives blossoming in Montreal, Los Angeles, and Pittsburgh. As the vision spreads, the mission remains the same: to create spaces where mothers feel connected, cared for, and never alone.
Motherhood is not meant to be a solitary journey. At Miriam’s Motherhood Center, women find the resources they need to care for their babies—but more importantly, they find the friendships and community that sustain them. In a world where motherhood can feel lonely, this center is a powerful reminder that every mother is part of something greater—a sisterhood of women, walking together, one step at a time.

More people like them = A more flourishing and bonded community!!
Thank you Leiters!!!
Always full when I’m there

Lots of great classes and a fun space to play for toddlers !
Love it!
Its a beautiful tribute to Mrs. Miriam Friedman. A woman of valor in countless ways.
I’ve been to the Motherhood Center and found it so relaxing and inviting. Everything is high quality and well thought out – the wooden toys, the soft pale colored couches, leather bound siddurim for davening time(!), top-notch equipment in the exercise room, coffee maker and pastries often offered during morning shiurim. Thank you, Thank you!! The place is a haven for mothers. Please support it – and if you are a mother that hasn’t visited yet, you owe it to yourself and your family to carve out some “me” time. You will be glad you did.
The Motherhood center truly is a gift. The postpartum support group was a lifeline to me when I became a mom, and the friendships I formed and Mothers I met at the center have become my mom tribe! Thank you Mushka!!
