Miami Mayor Francis Suarez has officially declared his candidacy for the 2024 presidential race, entering an already formidable field of Republican contenders.
At the age of 45, he is one of the younger contenders while already accumulating 13 years of public service. His father served as a two-time Miami mayor and his cousin is West Virginia Congressman Alex Mooney.
As he sets his sights on the presidency, Suarez aims to make his mark on the national political stage, drawing from his experiences as a successful mayor in the vibrant city of Miami. During his tenure, he has formed familiarly with the local Jewish community in South Florida and its many Chabad institutions.
During the tragic collapse of the Champlain Towers South beachfront condominium in Surfside, Florida, he visited The Shul of Bal Harbour and offered support. As reported on COLlive.com, when Suarez visited the Kotel in Jerusalem, he was joined by Rabbi Getzy Fellig of Chabad.
“Standing in front of the Western Wall in Jerusalem fills me with gratitude for the opportunity I have been given to lead Miami and gives me an opportunity to pray, with faith and optimism, for the future,” the Mayor commented at the time.
But Suarez faces stiff competition from a range of influential figures within the GOP. Here are some of the prominent contenders:
Former President Donald Trump: As a disruptive figure in American politics, Trump remains an influential force within the Republican Party. With a dedicated base of supporters, Trump’s potential candidacy for the 2024 race has generated significant speculation. His decision could significantly impact the dynamics of the GOP primary.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis: Widely recognized for his staunch conservative policies and proactive response to the COVID-19 pandemic, DeSantis has quickly risen to prominence within the Republican Party. His unwavering commitment to conservative principles and leadership during challenging times have endeared him to many Republican voters.
Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina: As the only Black Republican in the Senate, he brings a compelling personal story and a fresh perspective to the race. His focus on economic opportunity, criminal justice reform, and his ability to reach across party lines has garnered admiration from both sides of the aisle.
Former Vice President Mike Pence: With his experience serving in the Trump administration, Pence presents himself as a seasoned candidate with a strong conservative track record. His steadfast loyalty to conservative values and his measured approach to governance appeal to many Republican voters.
Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley: A well-respected figure within the Republican Party, Haley’s tenure as U.N. Ambassador and former Governor of South Carolina has solidified her position as a prominent GOP candidate. Known for her strong conservative principles and support for Israel, Haley brings a compelling mix of experience and leadership to the race.
Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie: As a seasoned politician, Christie boasts a wealth of experience as the former Governor. Known for his straightforward approach and ability to connect with voters, this will be Christie’s second attempt to reach the White House.
With Mayor Suarez’s entry into the race, he adds another perspective rooted in his successful tenure in Miami. His pro-business policies, commitment to embracing emerging technologies, and experience in urban governance make him a candidate to watch closely.
As the 2024 presidential election draws nearer, the Republican Party finds itself with a competitive field of contenders, each seeking to shape the party’s direction and secure the nomination.
