Thousands of Jews gathered in Moscow, Russia to participate in the lighting of the first Chanukah candle at Russia’s largest Menorah, across from the Kremlin.
The Menorah was lit in front of thousands of passersby, under police protection with the cooperation of the Moscow Police.
The excitement in the gathered crowd reached its peak as the chief rabbi of Russia, Rabbi Berel Lazar lit the candles after loudly reciting the blessings.
Alongside the Chief Rabbi of Russia was the guest of honor Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rabbi David Lau, along with Israel’s ambassador to Russia.
Chief Rabbi Lazar wished all Russian Jews everywhere, “Happy Chanukah,” saying, “the light will continue to go on and continue until a new light will shine on the land of Israel.”
Joyful Chasidic dancing swept the crowd after the lighting, accompanied by live music and singing by the students of Cheder Menachem Talmud Torah in Moscow.
With the live satellite showing the ceremony to millions of homes, it was certainly a publicizing of the miracle in its greatest form.
