Mr. Mendel Glick, founder of an iconic Melbourne Kosher bakery chain and beloved member of the Melbourne Chabad community, passed away on Shabbos, 28 Tammuz, 5777.
He was 94.
Menachem Mendel ben Avrohom, a Holocaust survivor who experienced several concentration camps including Auschwitz and Buchenwald, lost both parents and all his 9 siblings and barely survived himself. Despite these unbearable personal tragedies, he managed to start a new life in Australia and recreate his own dynasty with his wife Sarah.
Arriving in Australia after the war, together with his wife Sarah he founded the iconic Melbourne Kosher bakery “Glick’s Cakes and Bagels,” credited with bringing the first European style boiled bagels to Melbourne.
The shop later grew to a chain of 6 bakeries across Melbourne and 2 in Sydney, Australia.
But his true legacy is not the bagels. His large family ka’h live lives that always made him very proud, following what he taught by example, contributing to the perpetuation of Yiddishkeit. They are found across the globe from Melbourne to Ukraine, and include active community participants, teachers, pulpit rabbis, shluchim, and community supporters of various forms.
He was known by all who knew him for his extreme gratitude to G-d for everything he ever had, particularly surviving the Holocaust.
He is survived by his wife Sarah Glick, and children Rabbi Avrohom Glick, Susie Kluwgant, Leslie Glick, Miriam Ludmir (Israel), Pnina Levitan, Chaim Glick, Esti Graj, Nechama Bendet, and Nochum Glick, and many grandchildren, great -grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren around the world.
The levaya took place on Sunday in Melbourne.

A loss to the community here in Melbourne. While Mr Glick never knew me, I always looked up to him and marveled when I saw him walking around the shop at ripe old age.
The eulogies at his Leyava epitomized his greatness – may his memory be a blessing.
This is a very special family. May you always give him sweet nachas
What a special neshama!
What a very special neshama
His memory is a blessing.
Boruch Dayan hoemes.
His everything flavoured bagels are the best.
I would always see him early shabbos morning saying tehilim
Apparently pesach was his hardest time because he could not work and he could not have a schnapps
