New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg was honored with lighting Brooklyn’s Largest Menorah as Jews around New York celebrated the first night of Chanukah on Tuesday evening.
The giant Menorah, on display at Brooklyn’s Grand Army Plaza, celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, of purity over adulteration, of spirituality over materiality.
The lighting attracted hundreds of Crown Heights residents and other neighborhood locals, enjoying dancing, live music, hot food and prizes for the children.
Rabbi Shimon Hecht, Director of Chabad Brooklyn, accompanied Mayor Bloomberg on a cherry picker in order to reach the top of the Menorah.
The Menorah lighting’s opening ceremony was dedicated to the memory of NYPD Officer Peter Figoski, who was killed in the line of duty a few days ago.
“It’s very easy to forget that there are very brave and dedicated men and women who risk their lives for us on a daily basis,” Rabbi Hecht said.
“It’s important to take a few moments to remember that this city owes its safety and well-being to them.”
Brooklyn Boro President Marty Markowitz addressed the crowd as well.
The lighting takes place at Brooklyn’s Grand Army Plaza every night of Chanukah at 6:00 PM. However, in order to accommodate Shabbos, Friday night’s lighting will take place at 3:30 PM, and Motzoei Shabbos at 7:30 PM.
