NYC’s Mayor Eric Adams was in attendance at My Extended Family’s Annual Staff Appreciation evening.
Noting the energy of the dedicated team from across the Tri State Area, providing full service support groups for children in Crown Heights, Five Towns, Monsey, Teaneck and Flatbush, and now Boro Park, in addition to offering after school programming, trips, events, one on one mentoring with high school students and licensed clinicians for families, the Mayor was moved.
The Mayor shared his personal experiences growing up in a single parent household. “My mother raised me and my 5 siblings alone, often singing songs to us to replace our hunger pains. One day a van of women showed up with boxes full of groceries. I looked in the boxes, and they were all open. Half a box of spaghetti, half a box of pancake mix, and half a jar of mayonnaise. They couldn’t afford to buy us groceries, so they went in their cupboards, took half of what they had, and gave it to us. I remember sitting on the floor of the kitchen that day and just crying, realizing what these people had done for us,” said Mayor Eric Adams.
“You are helping all these single parent families, probably just doing what you think is right. Trust me, one of them is an Eric Adams… I have made it because of those women. I thank you for what you are doing for all those families. You make us all proud.”
Founded by Flatbush Rabbi Yoseph Vigler and his wife Tzippy, My Extended Family addresses needs experienced by children from single-parent homes, helping fill in the gaps with comprehensive and preventative support in a safe, caring environment. The programs My Extended Family runs include homework help, school advocacy, big brother/sister mentorship, and more. In locations across Crown Heights, Five Towns, Monsey, Teaneck, Flatbush, and Boro Park, they focus on being the extended family of these children, providing a warm, wholesome space where children can connect and thrive.
