In a poignant show of unity, Mayor Eric Adams was joined by prominent Jewish community leaders on Thursday at the Center for Jewish History in Manhattan to condemn the fatal shooting of two Israeli embassy workers outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., the night before.
The solemn vigil brought together faith leaders, elected officials, and civil rights advocates to denounce antisemitic violence and call for solidarity in the face of rising hate crimes both domestically and abroad. The victims—reported to be a couple soon to be engaged—were gunned down outside a diplomatic reception, shocking the nation and prompting immediate outcry.
Standing at the podium alongside the Mayor were Jessica Tisch, NYPD Commissioner, Rabbi Joseph Potasnik, Executive Vice President of The New York Board of Rabbis, and other leaders of the Jewish and Muslim communities.
“You’re either on the side of hate — or you’re going to stand up against it,” said Deputy Mayor Fabian Levy. “We’re sick and tired of the Jew hate and the anti-Semitic crimes we are seeing across our city, across our nation, and across the globe.”
Mayor Eric Adams denounced the brutal slaying of the young couple and slammed recent anti-Israel protests as antisemitic.
“We may not agree on politics,” Adams said, “but we must agree that we won’t let hate or violence take anyone,” he said.
“I’ve been speaking out against this hate from day one, but not only in the area of anti-Semitism but hatred altogether,” said Adams. “This city has no room for hate, and this country cannot have room for hate. Where do we draw the line, and when do we draw the line? So we’re not alright. I said that on October 8th, and I will say it again. As mayor of the largest Jewish community outside of Israel, this isn’t a philosophical discussion for me. It’s a level of clarity that we must all express.
“We will not be silent because we cannot be silent, and watch our brothers and sisters of any group in general — specifically our Jewish brothers and sisters — under attack in our country,” the Mayor said.
