The newly initiated Project Chanukah 100, written about on this site only a day ago, is expanding in popularity quickly. Shluchim and other groups are eagerly adopting bases to provide gifts and Jewish experiences to the IDF soldiers who must be on duty during Chanukah.
Next Generation IDF (NGIDF) is behind the campaign, and already almost 40 bases have been adopted. The overall goal is to adopt 100 bases, supporting over 100k soldiers. A complete list of those who adopted a base is below.
“It is amazing to see this new initiative embraced so readily by shluchim and other organizations. Yes, we’ve been creating immeasurable impact since 2010, with many programs for the soldiers,” said Rabbi Zalmen Hertzel when asked about the program’s rapid success. “But with this new initiative, it could have taken a while to build steam. The sheer hashgocha pratis evident in everything we are doing is amazing.”
Chabad houses are finding this a unique way to conduct outreach with their existing constituents. The NGIDF Project Chanukah 100 seems to help connect Shluchim with their congregants because Jews of all statuses tend to have a love for Israel, her soldiers, and their sacrifices.
“We wanted to give our community the opportunity to expand their horizons. As The Alter Rebbe writes, “there’s no greater Tzedaka than to give Tzedoka to Eretz Yisroel,” and especially to our soldiers, risking their lives every day for Klal Yisroel!”
said Rabbi Ben Tzion Krasnianski, Director of Chabad of the Upper East Side, one of the Chabad centers who adopted a base.
As an added bonus for anyone who helps the Shluchim and other groups who adopted a base is that they are entered into a raffle for a trip for two to Israel that includes a VIP visit with IDF soldiers.
Why NGIDF Was Created
NGIDF was created to connect soldiers to their Jewish roots through amazing Jewish experiences. When soldiers have to be on duty, even on holidays, and away from their families, NGIDF is there to show appreciation and make it a little more palatable.
While NGIDF is busy during festivals working with soldiers to give them a small taste of the holiday, NGIDF also shows support for soldiers throughout the year. Through unique programs like concerts for soldiers, educational workshops, gifts, meals, services and more, NGIDF works hard to be a major part of each soldier’s life.
David, a former soldier with the IDF, said, “Thanks to NGIDF, my service in the IDF was so pleasant. The care and support they provided made me feel at home.”
Project Chanukah 100
This adopt-a-base project is focused on partnering with shluchim, communities, shuls, and others throughout the world, to support 100 bases and 100,000 soldiers for Chanukah.
As each organization adopts a base, they reach out to family, friends and members of their community, banding together with others around the world, to raise money for NGIDF. And each donation is entered into a special raffle for a trip to Israel for 2, including a VIP meet-the-soldiers event.
