Gavriel Lavi of Jerusalem was on his way home from praying at the Kotel on Friday morning, when he was attacked by a 19-year-old Arab terrorist. The attacker stabbed Gavriel 17 times, in the scalp, neck, back, chest and legs.
Lavi was rushed to Shaarei Tzedek hospital, where he is still unconscious. Wife Nilli and their four young children wait patiently at his bedside. Doctors continue to monitor his condition closely.
In addition to the initial shock of the attack, and their fear for the injured man’s future, the family is experiencing an often overlooked side-effect of terrorism: financial pressure. Gavriel is the sole financial supporter of his family. Nilli and her four children are currently operating with no income, and burning through their savings quickly.
In an attempt to ease her mother of her burden, teenaged daughter Gali has opened a Chesed Fund campaign. “I want to do whatever I can to help my mother during this scary time,” reads campaign text. “I know that she is afraid about money right now, because our father is the one who supports us, and now he is in the hospital for we don’t even know how long.”
In an inspiring turn, some have begun to respond to the tragedy with support and generosity. Donations have begun to trickle in to Gali’s fund, allowing the traumatized family to rest assured that their bills will be paid during this tumultuous time.
Their true sense of calm will not return, of course, until Gavriel opens his eyes.
