Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia has arrested a driver for the Lyft ride-hailing service who violently attacked a Chabad rabbi this past Sunday.
Police said they arrested 32-year-old Tireek Myrick of Northwest, DC, and charged him with “Simple Assault” on Wednesday, January 31, 2024.
“On Sunday, January 28, 2024, at approximately 10:17 a.m., the victim was picked up by the suspect, who is a ride-share driver, in the 1800 block of Connecticut Avenue, Northwest,” the police report said.
“During the ride, the victim requested the suspect to lower the volume on the radio. The suspect canceled the ride, and the victim exited the vehicle. The suspect followed the victim on foot and assaulted the victim. The suspect fled the scene.”
The victim was Rabbi Menachem Shemtov, 29, Director of Chabad of Georgetown and Chabad Young Professionals in Washington.
The assault on Shemtov was captured on video both by Shemtov himself and a bystander. The driver held a car key in his hand while punching Shemtov in the face. Shemtov went to be treated at a clinic for a gash to his face.
Shemtov is the son of Rabbi Levi Shemtov, executive vice president of American Friends of Lubavitch, and the grandson of Rabbi Avraham Shemtov, the Rebbe’s Shliach to the White House and Chairman of Aguas Chassidei Chabad International.
Police said they are investigating this offense “as being potentially motivated by hate or bias.” They added: “A designation as a hate crime by MPD does not mean that prosecutors will prosecute it as a hate crime. The Special Liaison Branch is assisting with this investigation.”
DC News Now reported that Myrick was also charged with burglary for an earlier incident that happened on R St. NE on Jan. 13. There, police say Myrick failed to deliver food and the victims canceled their order.
A short time later, Myrick showed up at their home, yelling and banging on the door and demanding money from the victims. When they refused to open the door, he kicked in the door, again demanded money and took property before fleeing the scene.

I’m just wondering what criteria Human Resources at Lyft uses for their hiring.
A common theme seems to string together every time crime is mentioned in here, and it’s not racist white trumpists
Illegal alien?
The usual suspects at it again…
Interesting how he continued driving for driving services after the first incident. He should have been reported immediately to all the driving platforms after that so that he be removed. And it should be mandatory that they remove him and ppl like him
how much is he suing lyft for
How much would you accept to allow someone to punch you in the face repeatedly with a key sticking out of their fist and let me know who to make the check out to.
