The well-known and beloved chossid, Reb Zalmon Jaffe obm was the force behind the establishment of Lubavitch Manchester, in its present building, nearly 60 years ago.
The Rebbe instructed his son, Rabbi Avrohom Jaffe to become the Rov of the shul and be involved in the wider community. The Rebbe also encouraged Rebbetzin Susan Jaffe to set up N’shei and B’nos Chabad in Manchester. The Rebbe took a very keen interest in Lubavitch Manchester and sent literally hundreds of letters over the years.
Initially, most of the programing was focused on the youth. Until this day, their work with them is still a very vibrant and important part of the organisation, with many of the programs still running today. These include Shabbos group, youth minyonim, mid-week clubs as well as one of the biggest Gan Yisroel Day Camps in the world. This past year there were over 900 participants.
Over the years they were also instrumental in Lag B’omer parades and carnivals in which Jewish Schools from all over Manchester would parade in the streets in a show of Jewish Pride and solidarity.
For over 40 years there has been a Giant Menorah lighting in front of the Town Hall with the attendance of the Lord Mayor, local dignitaries and prominent leaders of the Jewish community. Of course, there has also been the continuous pastoral visits to hospitals and homes and outreach programs.
The building has had continuous use since it was built and is now in need of major renovation. It will then be able to open as a Community Centre serving the entire community, increasing, expanding and enhancing existing projects. These will include programs for everyone in the community, starting with mother and babies, after school and weekend clubs for the youth and teens, workshops and programs for the young marrieds as well as shiurim and activities for the retired members of the community. The building will be made fully wheelchair accessible to enable the full participation of those with special needs.
We are running a match funding campaign on ז שבט- Motzei Shabbat and Sunday the 1st and 2nd February, where every donation will be doubled.
We are asking every member of the worldwide Chabad community, those whom we have benefited in the past and those we hope to reach out to in the future, to help us reach our goal and open a community centre, that will serve the entire community.

No 62 as it is affectionately known is the hub for Lubavitch in North Manchester, although I’m not strictly a Lubavitcher Chosid in some way we all are, and the benefits of having a shul so close to home with the warmest most inviting crowd, the boys minyan as well as the future plans that you can help achieve, makes this campaign an absolute necessity for all….https://www.charidy.com/lubman/lachs
