The offices of American Friends of Lubavitch (Chabad) in Washington, DC, are buzzing these days with preparations for the upcoming “Living Legacy” conference.
Hundreds of shluchim and baalei batim are expected to participate in this bi-annual gathering which will take place beginning early evening June 20 and all day June 21.
Top government officials, diplomats and international dignitaries, academics and business leaders join the participants in a powerful international assembly marking the legacy of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of blessed memory.
The last conference featured Congressional leadership and members from both Houses of Congress, an international luncheon “The World of Chabad-Lubavitch” which drew dozens of ambassadors joining their shluchim and special guest Deputy Sec. of State (now White House Chief of Staff) Jack Lew.
Speaking as well was Chief Rabbi Yona Metzger, and Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren. The new shliach to India was announced at that event on behalf of Merkos by Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky.
An academic forum preceded that lunch, moderated by internationally renowned author Rabbi Joseph Telushkin, Rabbi Dr. Naftali Leowenthal, Rabbi Tzvi Freeman and Rabbi Shlomo Yaffe.
After meetings among the guests from various regions, everyone joined for the gala banquet, with a powerful message from Rabbi Abraham Shemtov, Chairman of Agudas Chassidei Chabad, and keynote address by Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel. Avraham Fried dazzled the crowd with an amazing musical performance.
The next morning, a large delegation visited the White House and were received by senior White House officials, with the highlight an address by Vice President Joe Biden.
A parallel program, the Mayberg Fellows, was organized for select student leaders from around the US, in cooperation with the Chabad on Campus International Foundation.
Organizers expect many of the internationally renowned figures to join the program once again, and there are even more in store this year, which will be announced closer to the conference.
