The first time Eitan met Billy, he bluntly asked: “How come you’re not wearing a kippah?”
Eitan is the 6-year-old son of Esq. Elchonon and Dr. Devorah Rivkah Shagalov. It has been his dream to learn how to play tennis, so his parents decided to get him lessons, and Billy is the instructor whom they hired.
While Eitan enjoyed the first lesson, his question about the kippah went unanswered by the instructor. So the next time they met, Eitan asked, “By the way, are you Jewish?” Once again, the instructor was left speechless.
By the third lesson, when Billy admitted that he is indeed Jewish, Eitan seemed both unsurprised and even prepared. The young boy pulled out a kippah from his bag and handed it to Billy and then invited him for dinner that Thursday evening, which was during Chanukah.
The instructor kindly declined, saying that he was unavailable that evening. Eitan responded by saying, “Please join us for the Friday night Shabbos meal!”
Realizing that he would have to show up for the meal at Eitan’s house, the instructor agreed and showed up that Friday night wearing the kippah Eitan has gifted him. “Billy was having an amazing time at our home,” the father, Elchonon Shagalov told COLlive.com.
During the meal, Billy was invited to stop by the Prim’N Proper clothing store in Bay Harbour Islands, Florida, that is owned by Eitan’s grandparents R’ Mendel and Devorah Shagalov.
Billy showed up on Sunday and put on tefillin for the first time in his life. He was then invited to light the six-foot Chanukah menorah that stood outside the Lubavitch-owned store.
“Eitan could not feel prouder to be part of the Rebbe’s army,” his grandfather said.
From a question of “Where is your kippa?” to having Billy’s Bar Mitzvah, and publicly light the Chanukah menorah, “This is Eitan’s Chanukah miracle story,” they said.
