Life in the Golem’s City

Czech TV recently aired a short film about Jewish life in Prague, directed by Chabad Rabbi Manis Barash. They visited the Maharal Institute for rabbinical studies and the Alt-Neu Synagogue, where the body of the Golem lies in the attic. Video

Emunas Tzadimkim

To the discussion surrounding comment #4, I would suggest that a bit of Emunah would go a long way especially since as Lubavitcher Chassidim we have a mesorah from the Rebbe Rashab about how he had to help the Frierdiker Rebbe ‘recover’ from what he saw in the attic.
I am positive it existed, but Hashem has allowed it to be concealed from us as we might succumb to the temptation to explore it.
Don’t be so quick to dismiss a story of a tzadik especially one backed by our Rabbeim.

Why not stolen?

I visited prague some time ago and took a tour of the alt nay shule I asked the tour guide if the golem is in the attic she started laughing and said if she had a dollar for every time someone asked that she would be a wealthy woman. Bekitzur, she said there is nothing in the atic people go there all the time for maintenence etc and shes never heard of anything being up there, no shaimos, no golem. Perhaps for the pourposes of professional reporting COLLIVE editors should have written the attic where the golem “allegedly” lies or… Read more »

The Attic

#4 is correct. Rabbi Manis Barash, the Shaliach in Prague, told me last summer on a visit there that the attic is completely empty. A few years ago, a non-Jewish workman was given a camera just before he went into the attic to do repairs, with instructions to take photos of the entire attic. He brought back photos of every inch of the attic, the ceiling, walls and floor. There was nothing there. Rabbi Barash himself saw the photos (about 36, if I remember correctly) and told me there is absolutely nothing in the attic. Obviously, at some point, the… Read more »

We have no evidence that the maharal ever made a golem. It is folklore.

I personally don’t agree with you since no-one is allowed up there and secondly there is the story of during world war two, a nazi tried going up there and his gun got stuck in pile of shaimos when he tried to move some of the shaimos and he was paralyzed.

Prague is the best
