Former U.S. Senator Joe Lieberman is the frontrunner to be the new director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the domestic intelligence and security service of the United States.
White House sources said President Donald Trump is leaning towards the 75-year-old Lieberman, an Orthodox Jew who represented Connecticut in the Senate. He was the Democratic vice presidential candidate in 2000.
On Wednesday, Trump met with Lieberman, acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, former Oklahoma Governor Frank Keating, and former top FBI official Richard McFeely, NBC reported.
Politico quoted a source as saying that Trump bonded with Lieberman during their meeting and that the president left leaning towards Lieberman.
Trump reportedly told one adviser he wants to make an announcement before he leaves Friday on his first foreign trip which will include Israel.
Trump told reporters Thursday afternoon “we’re very close to an FBI director” and that the pick would be announced soon. When asked whether Lieberman was among the finalists, he replied yes.
Lieberman first connected with Chabad-Lubavitch in his Law School days at Yale University in New Haven. As he describes, a friend of his brought him to a farbrengen in 770 Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn, NY, with the Rebbe.
“I was entranced, if you will, with the fervor, with the spirit and with the sense of purpose,” Lieberman said of the farbrengen. “I was impressed by the Rebbe. By his obvious spirituality, by his soaring intellect, by the extent to which he was involved in the world.”
Lieberman’s respect and reverence for the Rebbe turned him into an admirer, supporter later and seeker of advice and blessing throughout his public and political career.
During one of his early political campaigns, Lieberman traveled to Crown Heights to seek the Rebbe’s blessings. Lieberman served as the Senator from Connecticut from 1989 until his retirement in early 2013.

Unfortunately, Sen. Lieberman was (and probably still is) soft on Shleimus HaAretz. He was included in the book “Diamonds of the Rebbe”, with his story having a post-note by the author to the effect, “Readers may be wondering why we included him in the book if he was not in line with the Rebbe’s views on Shleimus HaAretz. This is no easy job in these bizarre times, and if anything not good were to occur on his watch, it would be not good for him and maybe for many other American Jews, G-d forbid. Wish it weren’t so.

Just what we need… another tie to Chabad. Considering the head of the FBI is never a popular person by the time they leave the position, I fail to see how this is a good thing for Mr. Leiberman, Chabad, or American Jews.
