76 Mitzvah Tanks rolled past 770 and headed to the streets of NYC in honor of the Rebbe’s 124th birthday. COLlive.com provided live coverage with Avremi Rapoport from the ground, from the preparations, to dispatch from Crown Heights, and a ride-along as the parade made its way to Manhattan.
The largest Mitzvah Tank parade, staffed by Tankistim from yeshivas around the world, then fanned out across Brooklyn and Manhattan, distributing thousands of matzos, wrapping tefillin, and handing out Shabbos candles to Jews across the five boroughs.
While Yud Alef Nissan falls on Sunday this year, the parade was held strategically on Thursday. With over 3 million people commuting into NYC on a typical workday, the streets of Manhattan are packed with foot traffic, giving the Tankistim far greater reach than a quiet Sunday would allow.
The parade takes on greater significance this year due to the ongoing war in Eretz Yisroel. The Mitzvah Tanks were founded in 1974 following the Yom Kippur War, and over 50 years later, they are going stronger than ever, fighting darkness with light wherever they go.
