On Sunday May 22, 2011, the Lag Ba’Omer Parade organized by Chabad Brisbane began at the local park of the picturesque suburb of Carindale.
All participants, children of all ages, parents, and grandparents, assembled at 4pm under the canopy of a fine sunny blue sky along with all the paraphernalia to be included in the parade, namely a Vintage 1955 Morris Minor named Moshele, lovingly restored by Neville Josman, a 10mtr float decorated by a hullabaloo of balloons of variegated colors and decked with large banners proclaiming “Acts of Goodness and Kindness – Let’s Welcome Moshiach.”
On the float there was a bed on which was lying a papier-mâché patient who did not look like he had a chance to survive the parade, an inviting fully-set table and a bench on which were seated, arm-in-arm, two papier-mâché mates, to illustrate the precepts of “Care for the Sick” “Hospitality” and “Love Thy Neighbor as thyself.” There were, to be displayed, banners galore depicting colorfully various Mitzvot (good deeds) such as “One good deed brings another” “Fill your home with Jewish books” “Teach Torah diligently to your children”, and “Keep the Shabbat and the Shabbat will keep you,” and many others.
After reciting the relevant Pesukim (Torah verses) with vigor and aplomb, led by the children, the parade began with great pride, pomp and fanfare preceded by the impressive vibrant float, lively marching music, the eloquent banners, and many lively children, parents and grandparents, marching with head up, some merrily dancing others gleefully clapping.
The local householders and the passers-by stopped, stared, waved and cheered as the parade made its way to the Chabad House where the festivities continued with zest and gaiety with a community BBQ and a spectacular fire show amid lots of enjoyment and conviviality.
As one participant put it, “from my many years living in this community I cannot recall witnessing and experiencing such open Jewish pride, joy and unity; and the many children who participated attests to the positive continuity of Judaism in Brisbane.”
Chabad Brisbane is infinitely thankful to all those dedicated volunteers, who have contributed to the success of this extraordinary Lag Ba’Omer celebration which has inspired and elevated all those who were able to attend. Most importantly we extend our thanks and gratitude to the Brisbane City Council, and in particular to local Councilor and Deputy Mayor of Brisbane Adrian Schrinner, and the Brisbane Police Force for their wonderful support and assistance.
