After several years of what some saw as the kosher ice cream wars, the category has settled into a shared turf between Klein’s and Mehadrin.
Both companies are rolling out new products and hoping to capture a larger share of the Chalav Yisrael (higher kosher standard) market.
Klein’s is also enhancing its status as a market leader with its Ice Cream Houses in Jewish communities throughout New York. Mehadrin is big on customer relations as well, including its Mehadrin ice cream trucks.
But supermarket executives say that they carry both because of consumer preferences, largely based on product.
Unlike Greek Yogurt, where customers show a clear preference (for example, Norman’s vs. Mehadrin), in the ice cream category, it is the product that dictates what brand the customer buys.
With estimates of sales ranging from $50-$80 million, the stores say they see a growth of at least 15%, largely due to demographics where large families dominate.
Yum to Klein’s ice cream
Love their peanut opus and all of their other products
I dont understand this article.
There always was competition between mehadrin and kleins, and now there will continue to be competition, as both companies have released more products… So what has changed? What “war” has ended?
ice cream that tastes like haagen dasz…that’s one thing i miss from my pre-CY days. ok and also carvel…
Abe’s for me
…another Cold War is over! 🙂
It is ironic! All the owners of Klein‘s Mehadrin and Abe’s are cousins. I know cause they are related to me. The originator of kosher ice cream was rev winds are good. Mrs. Klein was his sister. He gave the business over to his brother in law and sister. The ownerof Mehadrin is a Weinberger. He is the son of the Originator. Abe from Montreal is the son of one of the younger Weinberger brothers. SO There should be no reason to fight. There is enough ice cream for everyone
How is the war over? My husband will only eat Kleins ice cream. In any form. Says it’s way ahead of any other CY product.
