“Welcome to flight 770, we will be landing soon in Tel Aviv international airport, please buckle your seat belts.” This announcement came over the loudspeaker, not in a Boeing 737, but in the Preschool hallway/airplane at Cheder Lubavitch Morristown, NJ.
On Tu B’shvat the preschool children took a virtual trip in to the fields of Eretz Yisroel to see first hand the the shivas haminim and how they grow in Eretz Yisroel. They each received passports and attached their very own photos to them.
The first stop was at the Kosel to Davven, the children painted the huge Kosel mural on the wall.
The children went from center to center experiencing and discovering each one of the Shivas Haminim. They explored how each one of the minim grow, what products are made from each one, and what special mitzvos we can do with them.
In the Chitah center the children played with wheat stalks, made their very own dough and learned about the special mitzvah of Hafrashas Challah. The children practiced bringing the Korban Omer which was made from barley to the Bais Hamikdosh with tweezers while working their fine motor skills.
After picking the Gefen off the vines in Eretz Yisroel the children used their grapes to sqeeze their own grape juice. In the Tainah center the children noticed the big leaves of the tainah tree and examined the seeds of the figs with magnifying glasses. They tied a red string around the first tainah that grew to prepare them to bring as Bicurim to the Bais Hamikdosh.
Have you ever seen a pomegranate painting? After counting the many seeds of the Rimon the children created their very own painting by squeezing the pomegranate seeds.
The Zayis center had the children taste testing different types of olives and graphing their likes to the olives.
Lastly, in the Devash center the children tasted and differentiated between the different types of honey. They explored the way dates grow on very tall palm tress, and shook lulavim that grow on palm trees. They looked at many pictures of different Tzaddikim because Tzadikim are compared to dates.
What a wonderful hands on experience the children had. Every one of our senses was used to explore the special fruits of Eretz Yisroel!
