In Tishrei of 5714 (1953), the Rebbe established Keren Hashana under Machne Israel. The Rebbe explained that through this fund, every participant fulfills the mitzvah of giving tzedaka every single day of the year.
The Rebbe taught the unique impact of collective giving:
“… In this way, one’s donation, large or small, is mixed and diffused and becomes one with the rest of the funds, like liquids mixed together, so that each amount of tzedaka that goes out from the general fund contains a share of the individual donations made to the fund.” (Sicha, 24 Tishrei 5714)
How does it work? The fund distributes tzedaka every single day — twice a day — on behalf of all those who contribute.
With just one donation to Keren hahshana, you ensure a full year of daily giving on behalf of yourself and your family.
The Rebbe encouraged that donations be made for each member of the family in an amount corresponding to the number of days in the year (See Likkutei Sichos, vol. 2, p. 651).
Year after year, during the month of Tishrei, the Rebbe would publicly urge participation in this special initiative. By joining, you and your family are included in a fund the Rebbe personally established and nurtured, to ensure that YOU don’t miss a day of GIVING.
