Yeshivas Lubavitch in Cincinnati, Ohio, welcomed a special visitor last week: Michigan Supreme Court Justice Richard Bernstein.
Justice Bernstein, identified to the students by his first Jewish name of Reuven, is a tireless advocate for disabled rights and a renowned motivational speaker around the country.
Blind since birth, Justice Bernstein is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Michigan and earned his juris doctorate from Northwestern University School of Law.
At the time he was admitted, he was the only blind person in the law school. To complete his studies, Bernstein would memorize lectures and have notes read to him to memorize. For tests, he memorized test questions and entire fact patterns (the basis for the questions), some of which would be as long as 5 pages.
The fact patterns would be repeatedly read to him until he committed the entire question to memory and could then provide an answer. He reportedly worked a full week for 13 hours each day.
Speaking to the bochurim, he spoke about the infinite power of Emuna in Hashem and the Neshama. He shared his amazing life-story and experiences and explained that everyone has the ability to be successful.
Following his talk, the Judge heard Shofar and put on Teffilin with the help of the Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Gershon Avtzon. They wished each other a happy and sweet new year.
