A 19- year old Jewish man was robbed at gunpoint in the heart of Crown Heights at 7:00 pm on Sunday evening.
The victim was walking on Union Street near Albany Avenue, when two men sitting in a parked car got out and held a gun to his face, he said.
The thieves were described as black males, 6’2 and 6’3, police said. They were wearing black and blue hoodies, and their faces were covered by medical masks, the victim’s family told COLlive.com.
The thieves pointed a gun at the victim’s face and demanded that he open his phone, transfer money to their cash app and Venmo accounts, and then took a photo of his ID. The incident took about 15 minutes, he said.
They then stole his phone and wallet and got back into their vehicle and drove off Eastbound on Union Street.
The victim called 911, and the police took a report of the robbery.
The NYPD 71 precinct is investigating the incident, and are searching for surveillance footage in the area, a police source said.
“This worrisome incident happened in the heart of Crown Heights, at a relatively early time,” the victim’s family said. “Just a few minutes after that, a young boy walked by and was collecting money for Chanukah Mivtzoim. A few minutes earlier and this could’ve happened to him,” they said.
I really hope this young man is ok. And about the Chanukah Mivtzoim collecting, the schools MUST give these. young boys proper guidelines. Last week a boy came to my door, must have been under 10 years old. I didn’t have change so I asked him if he has singles, change from $10. He opened his bag and pulled out an inch thick wad of singles and other bills to give me change. I quickly ushered him into my house so nobody on the street would see him with that kind of money. Please tell your children to keep the… Read more »
how about not training kids to collect money door to door. why and how is that something to train or educate children? maybe teach how to create a parnasa…
This is of course a tangent to this post’s article – i hope the robbery victim recovers from the violation of his safe being
A big part of operating a company is asking people to give you their business. If you can ask someone for their money straight out, you can ask them for their business, where you are actually giving them something in exchange. Learning to be gutsy and approach strangers definitely doesn’t hurt your chances of earning a parnasa.
A big part of shlichus is knowing how to collect money. It’ not a bad thing, it just has to be done the right way
There should be cameras
Check you phone
I really think CH is becoming a very dangerous neighborhood
I’d recommend people walk in groups or in pairs…. like in a war zone.
In the ’70s, the Rebbe said that people (specifically girls, I believe) should not walk by themselves at night. His haroahs were not limited to those times only.
I’d love to look it up. Do you have a source?
Kids should not be on the streets collecting money, it’s not safe
This story did NOT happen to boys that were collecting Chanukah mivtzoim money, btw.
Quite easily
This can hopefully prevent them using your phone against you
How would a password help when they are holding a gun pointed to his face?
This is shocking
They are getting more bold. We living in miracles. Every 4th black male has a criminal record. Be aware
You should be more aware of your racist rhetoric, it’s incredibly offensive and inappropriate.
Being beaten, shot and robbed
Truth hurts.
You’re having a hard time assuming the truth, that’s all. Stop looking like these people are peace and love – they are not! We have seen what they are capable of in Soho with their BLM protests
Defending the perpetrators?
Please…
It’s not racist to watch your back
I find THAT incredibly offensive and inappropriate. People who don׳t wish to be described as criminals should not act like criminals. Over 35 years of violence against a Jewish families in our community may be ok in YOUR opinion but normal
people who value decency, liberty and life will tend to disagree.. and there’s not much you can do about that.
The comment merely quoted a statistic. There was nothing racist about it. If you want to challenge the statistic, do so. But to smear someone with the epithet of racist for quoting a statistic is shameful.
…you feel on your own skin and bones some of these beatings and muggings and so forth? It’s easy enough for you to sit back in your easy chair and cry “racist” when it’s someone else getting attacked.
i doubt this statistic is useful. every how many *people* is a criminal? and if you have that statistic how would that be useful either? crime is evil. period. hope you aren’t a victim and do what you can responsibly to avoid it.
Right, avoid it just like you avoid Corona: sit at home let life pass you by & wait for the “grown-ups” to give you the go ahead for when it’s “safe” to go out, which gets more & more questionable depending on current agenda! “Responsibly” means you should further isolate yourself during certain times of the day, or better yet ALWAYS, be fearful & avoid life while masked criminals have the run of the place & are free to turn this place into the hell hole where they came from.
Sadly, crime is prevalent in black inner city communities. It is useful to know that. Just as you know that anyone of any skin color, gender identity, etc could walk amidst Chassidim without being physically assaulted, and statistics prove this, it’s important to know that in the black inner city community it isn’t so. Sadly.
I just looked up the data – one in three black men have felony convictions.
74.4% of all shootings in NYC are by African American suspects https://www1.nyc.gov/assets/nypd/downloads/pdf/analysis_and_planning/year-end-2019-enforcement-report.pdf p 11 of 16
We have no choice but adopt war time measures. Walk in pairs for your safety!!
Shame shame what this city has been reduced to. A third world city in terms of vagrants, filth and crime.
Stay safe folks!!
We have to volunteer with shmirah and make our streets safer
All our Young Chevra need to be encouraged to get involved in helping their community & volunteer by the patrols, its a real shame that its just a few dozen amazing concerned community members involved in doing patrols with Shmira & Shomrim, All Older Mature Bocherim & Yungerlait should really consider joining either, we cant always rely on other people but we all need to get involved ourselfs, the situation is getting more dangerous by the day, Its a time for action, There are BH thousands of eligible Young Men/Older Bocherim in CH, Those that can should really contact someone… Read more »
Want to walk women home at night or give us rides? I personally walk hone in the dark alone from work twice a week… my husband is busy putting kids to bed
Hopefully can just track the cash app account $ was transferred and get these idiots off the street
No cash bail these days. They’ll be out in hours.
Dear friends , please open your wallets and donate to shomrim !! We have no one to rely on but our own fellow Jews . It’s pikuach nefesh! If we all donate just five dollars they can help us even more
We have Hashem to rely on. Shmira and Shomrim are His shluchim. Maybe if those two groups were more united, there would be better patrolling and less crime
We need a well armed militia patrolling our streets
Can’t they track which account the money was transferred too?
This is one problem with masks
BRING BACK THE JDL!!
So now we know the true advantage of masks.
I wish someone would have driven off straight to the police station with the perps car while they were busy doing business. Wasn’t there a recent shooting incident with this same suv?
Crime is rising in every category daily, The streets are not safe, Each day has more and more shootings in Brooklyn & specifically in CH, and very dangerously many shootings in the Center of CH over the last few months, something that CH has not experienced since the 1970’s There are 2 types of Neighborhoods throughout NYC. One type (which is the majority) has the majority of their neighborhood’s residents want to Defund & even Abolish the NYPD, They have No respect for law & order, They want lawlessness & crime, They have No respect for the brave NYPD that… Read more »
Join Shmira / Shomrim At a time where the police are almost nowhere to be found, And there are lots of criminals on the streets of Kan Tziva Hashem Es Habrocha. Shmira and Shomrim, both great organizations, are out all day and all night doing their best for us all, they are also probably currently stretched thin because they are getting double or triple the amount of incidents more than usual that they need to respond to over the past few months. These brave individuals are volunteering their time for you, for us, for our community, but they both need… Read more »
Shomrim / Shmira – For mature working bocherim or men to help out with the current matzav of the safety and security of Kan Tziva Hashem Es Habrocha. To consider joining either of these selfless safety organizations for your neighborhood, best is to contact a friend, relative or someone you know that is already in either Shmira or Shomrim to inquire with them directly about possibly joining.
The incident took
Fifteen minutes and in all that time no one saw or heard what was going on??
All theses account can be tracked.
Do we know the boys and his mothers name? Trauma like this is no simple matter…
All streets are so dark that is hard to see who is walking around you … pls, bring light 💡 back!
We need morecops
Should be easy to catch them
Should he have run
What’s the advice from shonrim
Unbelievable
More cops more patrols
Perhaps some gadget that one can press for code red to call shomrim to the person’s location using gps
Best to not walk at night with wallet and phone
More police and cctv
Fund the police and we’ll reduce the crime
Where is the African American councilman and woman condeming this outrage?
More to the point did cops catch them and where are the black community BLM not raging against this
BE STREETWISE
DONT WALK ALONE OR ON DARK BADLY LIT STREETS,
MORE PATROLS AT NIGHT
PEPPER OR PAINT SPRAY
This is simply horrific
Back to the David Dinkin Days
Walk in 3s not 2s and don’t carry your phone or wallet at night. Just keep a $20 bill in case
Longer prison terms will deter this lawlessness. We need to start lobbying for heavier sentences for robbery and gun violence.
