The new Lubavitch Shul in Yerushalayim celebrated an important milestone last Sunday, as Shul-goers and supporters joined together on Isru Chag Shavuos to start writing their very own Sefer Torah.
Exciting? “Absolutely,” says co-founder Zalmy Mochkin. “Having a Shul brings people together, having a Torah brings our community closer together–it is a true sign of growth.”
Founded at the height of the pandemic, the minyan modestly began with a few young Lubavitchers, a borrowed Sefer Torah and some mean shmaltz. Since then, however, the Shul has grown substantially, with over sixty young men and women packing into the snug studio on Shabbos afternoon.
The Shul attracts students, singles, young married couples, and visitors, as well as a large number of Hebrew-speaking locals thirsty for a heimishe kiddush and some uplifting da”ch.
Moish Wilshanski, spending time in Jerusalem over Shavuos, described the Shul as incredibly warm and welcoming. “It mamish felt like home,” he said.
Right before Pesach, generous supporters expressed their wish to dedicate a Sefer Torah for the budding Shul. Arrangements were made, and on Isru Chag Shavuos, with joy and thanks to the Almighty, the scribe wrote the initial verse of bereshit.
“This is massive for our Shul,” co-founder Yisrael New expressed. “We are actively looking to expand our space and activities, and the one and only foundation for solid growth is the Torah.”
The Torah is being written in the merit of Harav Hachosid R’ Mordechai Dovid and his wife Chana OBM who raised a large Lubavitch family and humbly devoted their lives to Torah and doing the right thing. With the help of G-d, the Torah will be completed before next Pesach.
