Students of the Or Chaya Seminary in the holy city of Jerusalem gathered for a seudas hoda’ah (Thanksgiving feast) to express their gratitude to Hashem for their fellow students’ miraculous escape from a recent fire.
The event, organized by the seminary staff, followed a fire at the Beit Moshe dormitory a few weeks prior. The fire, caused by an unforeseen electrical circuit malfunction, resulted in minor smoke inhalation injuries for some students.
The event opened with words of encouragement and gratitude, emphasizing the valuable lessons learned from the incident in serving Hashem. Rabbi Naftali Roth, chairman of Tzach in Jerusalem, along with seminary rabbis, greeted the students with an emotional Birchas Kohanim, highlighting the importance of expressing gratitude, particularly on the yahrzeit of the Rambam.
Rivka Sheinberger, representing the students, poignantly recounted her harrowing experience of waking up to find her room filled with smoke. She shared the miraculous rescue efforts of instructors and staff. Together with all students and staff, she recited Mizmor L’toda from Tehillim, followed by the kapitalach of the Rebbe and Rebbetzin.
Teacher Rabbi Baruch Kaplan delivered a moving address on the blessing of the Hagomel, based on the teachings of the Rebbe.
Rabbi Yehuda Golan, director of Or Chaya, presented certificates of appreciation to those involved in the rescue, including police officers, firefighters, Magen David Adom drivers, United Hatzalah personnel, Arab construction workers, a helpful neighbor, and dedicated counselors.
A unique highlight of the event was each student reciting Birchas Hagomel, with rabbis and fellow students responding, “Amen.”
Rabbi Golan shared personal experiences of overcoming adversity, including the tragic loss of his brother, emphasizing the importance of growth and resilience. He assured students of the seminary’s full support and access to professional assistance in overcoming any trauma.
Rabbi Yosef Yitzhak Neumann, chairman and founder of Or Chaya, delivered an instructive lecture.
Rebbetzin Daniela Golan concluded the evening by thanking the management team and informing students that the seminary would temporarily relocate this week while the damaged building undergoes renovations and expansion for the student’s well-being.
