Saving lives is a calling. The ISAR organization (Israel Search and Rescue) operates with a broad vision, focusing on professionalism, skill, and technological innovation to assist those in distress. The organization, active for many years, not only saves lives in emergency situations but also regularly trains rescue teams, engages in fundraising, and raises awareness about emergency preparedness.
ISAR’s operational units began their work as early as 1973, and since 1986, the organization has served as the umbrella body for the search and rescue units operating under the Israeli National Police. With over 1,000 volunteers spread across Israel, these teams work 24/7, offering immediate assistance to citizens in need. ISAR’s rescue teams tackle complex and sensitive missions, collaborating with the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and other authorities.
The operational teams of ISAR include 12 regional rescue units deployed throughout Israel, conducting rescues and providing emergency response in all types of terrain—high cliffs, remote areas, mountainous regions, flood zones, and unique disaster scenarios. Each unit is equipped with the best tools available, including drones, advanced lighting systems, professional rescue equipment, and ropes, blending cutting-edge technology with physical resilience in the field.
Life-saving Missions in Israel and Worldwide
ISAR also operates internationally, playing an active role in emergency response efforts during natural disasters such as earthquakes, building collapses, and other global crises. These operations require advanced capabilities and specialized equipment. ISAR has helped locate missing persons and assist in complex rescue operations around the world, providing both immediate and long-term relief.
In addition to domestic operations, the organization helps raise awareness about global emergency situations and provides rescue services in cases of challenging and complex extractions. Every rescue mission requires comprehensive training, sophisticated equipment, and extensive logistical support, and ISAR delivers these with the highest standards of professionalism.
Assistance to the IDF during the “Iron Swords” War
During the “Iron Swords” war, which began on October 7, 2023, ISAR’s units played a pivotal role in supporting the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). In addition to using drones to search for bodies and missing persons following the horrific attacks, ISAR teams were directly involved in complex rope work to descend into tunnels in Gaza, a critical operation in the conflict.
ISAR teams were mobilized to enemy territory to identify threats and assist ground forces. Our highly trained rescue teams, specializing in locating missing persons, were deployed to work closely with all covert IDF forces. This collaboration aimed to gather crucial information regarding the status of civilians who were missing or abducted, many of whom were in unknown conditions. The results of these intensive searches were vital, and the diligent work of ISAR’s teams played a significant role in the ongoing operations.
Challenges Facing ISAR
Despite the impressive and vital work carried out by ISAR, the organization faces ongoing budgetary challenges that limit its ability to equip its teams and fulfill missions effectively. The high operational costs associated with maintaining professional rescue units are a significant burden, and while the team members are volunteers, the budget allocated by the Israeli government is insufficient to meet the organization’s needs.
This funding gap hinders ISAR’s ability to acquire necessary rescue equipment, provide advanced training, and ensure adequate insurance coverage for volunteers. There is an urgent need for better financial support to ensure that these highly skilled and selfless volunteers can continue to carry out their life-saving missions.
