The launch of Ikar at the Alcove’s Second Season got off to a nice start on Motzie Shabbos, November 26th.
Opened last year in Crown Heights by local resident Tamar Adelstein, Ikar at the Alcove offers women an eclectic mix of classes, lectures and creative workshops built around monthly themes throughout the year.
At our Second Season launch, choreographer Miriam Cohn led us in a variety of dance moves set to several different pieces of great Jewish music.
We appreciated the way she guided us through each step using Chassidic themes to visualize each movement.
Aside from Yours’ Truly who could use some help switching from right to left and back – the class was loads of fun and very invigorating!
Miriam’s talents are quite diverse. In addition to dance instruction, she is a Henna artist and an accountant too!
Ikar is offering a dance class with Miriam on Tuesday nights at 7:30pm and/or Sunday mornings at 10am beginning in January.
Class is limited to five people. Contact us at https://ikar-at-the-alcove.com/ to sign up.
After dancing we enjoyed a Melava Malka with tofu lasagna, salad and an elegant fruit and sweet Charcuterie board.
Storyteller Sema Cohen has long been in the field of interactive theatre and multi-lingual storytelling with appearances in France and Yerushalayim.
She learned the art while in seminary in Tzfat from screen writer and actor Rabbi Yisroel Bernath who is also on Shlichus with YEP.
Sema’s rendition of a Baal Shem Tov story about a Jew who needs to marry off his daughter was very well done!
Up next at Ikar is our Ladies Chanuka Lunch, Learn & More on the first day of Chanuka of the festival, Monday, December 19th from 11am – 3pm.
Standing Tall against the Winter Chill, an exploration of Chanuka through Torah, Movement and Craft opens with a Posture Workshop given by Sarede Switzer’s Bring the Gym to Me.
Well-known guest speaker, Rabbi Heschel Greenberg will join us (via Zoom) for lunch and farbrengen. On the Menu: Wraps, Salads, Dips and Dessert.
After lunch Needlepoint designer Susan Sutton will give a class on the Art of Embroidery and guide us in stitching our very own tapestries to take home.
