By Rabbi Menachem Kutner – Director of Chabad’s Terror Victims Project (CTVP)
I met A. the fighter who lost his sight and had his hand severed in combat in Gaza.
When I arrived to visit him during his recovery, he shared with me that in Gaza, he laid Tefillin with his fellow soldiers. But he has never had his own pair of Tefillin, and now in recovery, he feels that if he had his own pair of Tefillin, he would want to continue laying Tefillin.
I was moved by his request. After a few days, I returned to visit him, this time with a new pair of Tefillin from Tzach (Lubavitch Youth Organization) as a gift. For the first time in his life, he laid Tefillin with his own pair.
A. told me that in recent days, he underwent treatment and now has good news: although he lost his vision completely in his left eye, he is beginning to see shadows in his right eye. He hopes that the treatments will succeed and he will regain at least partial vision in his right eye.
I was very happy about the good news.
And the request came up in my mind:
Ribono shel olam, look at Your wonderful children who have tied themselves with the commandment of Tefillin “and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be for a reminder between your eyes.”
This fighter A. does not have a hand and no eyesight, and yet he asks to lay Tefillin…
Please, Hashem, have mercy on us, and bring us peace and tranquility, redemption and salvation swiftly in our days, Amen!
Thank you. Very moving.
