The Israeli ministry of defence named Major General Yoav Galant as the new chief of staff for the country’s armed forces, also known as IDF.
As head of the Israeli army’s Southern Command, Maj Gen Galant oversaw the Israeli offensive in Gaza in January 2009.
Maj Gen Galant’s appointment is expected to be formally approved by the government next week.
He will succeed Lieutenant General Gabi Ashkenazi, who is stepping down early next year.
A short while before his appointment, he has visited the terror-stricken Nariman House in Mumbai, which housed the local Chabad branch hit by Pakistani Islamic terrorists during the November 2008 attacks.
Chabad Shliach Rabbi Gabi Holtzberg and his wife, Rivky, were killed there along with another 4 Jewish visitors.
Galant was greeted by Lubavitch bochurim Levi Rabin and Yossi Cohen, who were temporarily manning the center for Merkos L’inyonei Chinuch.
“He took great interest in the work in Mumbai and in Chabad’s work globally,” Rabin and Cohen told COLlive.com.
“He was highly moved by Chabad Shluchim’s dedication and ultimate Mesiros Nefesh and he took the opportunity to put on Teffilin.”
instead of “knocking” Galant, how about a bit of Ahavas Yisroel [especially in Ellul] – he asked to go to Naramin House, the whole group were upset by what they saw – and he then put on Tefillin. Maybe that was his Teshuvoh for what he may have one previously – and it looks like he got his reward now. so number 2 – you go and “do” something and no: 7 think about security – what would you like him to have worn
thats really shocked!
i would love to see a pic. of the gechtmans rebuilding nariman house….
and he does wear the yar mool keh like mr rabin
