Dear readers,
You know me. I’ve lived in this community for almost forty years. I’ve lived in the same apartment building as you for the last twenty years. And I shop in the stores with you. And I get my sheitel done with you. And I even sometimes go for mani-pedis with you. We often used to spend Shabbos together, and we davened in the same shuls.
I’ve missed you. You haven’t gone away, but I have. No, not really gone away; I’m still here. But I’m locked in. I don’t leave my house. Since the first day that our community went into lock-down, I have not been past the threshold of my apartment door. No, not even on the landing.
It’s no one’s fault of course. It’s no one’s fault that I suffer from a breathing ailment, or that my husband has a compromised immune system. It’s no one’s fault that my own children weren’t able to visit their father for so many many weeks.
Yes, our community is doing much better now. I’m grateful for that. But my health issues demand that I continue to be extremely careful, both my husband and me.
So we’re locked in. Yes, we have everything we need; children and neighbors and online shopping.
But, I wish I could go to the fish store myself. I wish I could go to the fruit store and browse to see what looks good today. I wish I could go into the stockings store to see what catches my eye among all the tights. I wish I could shop the aisles of Empire Kosher and the Marketplace like I used to do – and like you do.
There’s only one reason that I can’t do that. It’s because you are not wearing a mask.
You feel protected; I’m glad for that. But your decision to not wear a mask, that’s what’s keeping me locked in. Your confidence that everything’s alright, that’s what’s not letting me go out to my local stores.
I imagine you walking the aisles of produce and making selections; I imagine you in the fish store contemplating which fish looks best today; I imagine you walking into the sheitel store to discuss your sheitel. Or your husband or son shmoozing in shul.
And I’m happy for you, truly.
But, I’m locked in. Yes, my decision. But I want both me and my husband to not get sick. And, sadly, that depends so much on you. So I have to order my fruit and vegetables by phone. It’s not a tragedy, I’m not looking for pity.
I just want you to understand. Do as you wish – I’m not telling you what to do. I’m just letting you know that I -and many like me- exist and are under distress. This is just a wave from us to you. We’re your parents. We’re your neighbors and we’re your friends.
Make the decisions that best suit you. But please remember the effect of your decisions on others.
I can’t wait to meet you in the condiments aisle! Even masked, our eyes will smile, and we’ll greet each other through our masks. Maybe not as comfortably as we used to do, but we’ll both know that we’re masked because we care about each other. Truly, I can’t wait to shop in real life again! Or to see you in shul again. Or even just on the Avenue!
I’ll wait patiently. A miracle would be nice, but even as we daven for one, Hashem has given us masks.

I feel for you being concerned about your pre existing conditions. However, your argument is not rooted in science but fear and propaganda. A mask will only prevent herd immunity. Nothing more, nothing less. What you need is for the younger healthy people to actually catch it and build immunity. Others will then develop t cell immunity. The only response some will consider respectful is yesirr right on it we’ll all wear masks forever and ever regardless of any other concern be it scientific or personal.
Even mild cases of covid can cause long lasting complications and damage to various parts of the body. I know this first hand as do many others. And we don’t yet have the full picture due to the novelty of this virus.

I have breathing difficulties when I wear a mask
So do I. So I wear it anyway in a store to protect others, and quickly take care of what I need to in the store, then go out and remove my mask.
And so do I. But that doesn’t mean I will go out at my convenience and compromise my friends.
Your mask is useless against the virus. It doesn’t even protect against dust which is a far larger partical. All it does is compromises your health. It is interesting to note how the mask mandates were implented only after the corona numbers were plunging already.
If you have difficulty breathing then you can at the very least wear a face shield. They sell at MP
So how would it feel if you were told- breathing difficulties with a mask? So stay home!? As many stores out of CH keep to – no mask, no entry. That would mean you’d need to stay at home and not shop!! That’s what it feels like for older people who are stuck at home and can’t go into a store!!
This isn’t totally accurate. I am the first to get on businesses for not enforcing mask rules. But lately I have noticed that some businesses have gotten better about it. And people are wearing masks more in the grocery store. And one hosiery store does have a very strict mask policy (I shop there.) Yes, some businesses I walk in and I walk right out cause the employees and/or the customers aren’t wearing masks. But we have to give credit and praise to our businesses that are doing the mask thing. And there are some.

This also applies to people who have grandparents living with them and can’t risk being exposed to the virus. Or those who have donated organs. We should all be extra cautious in crown heights even if the numbers have gone down.
I’m young, in my twenties, and I wear a mask walking down Kingston avenue even though it’s been extremely rare recently. Do I feel a bit self-conscious? Sure. Do I think it’s the right thing to do? Absolutely.

That is absolutely not true and an incorrect read of the study. “Assymptomatic” and “pre-symptomatic” are not the same thing AT ALL.
Meaning that yes, people can and do walk around BEFORE developing symptoms and spread.

Science does not support your claim. You are being lied to. No one is hurting you. You are hurting yourself by wearing the mask. It strains your oxygen intake and touching it brings the virus that sits on any surface to your face. It also lowers your immune system so if you do catch it you’re at a much higher risk.

I am not sure why the crown heights community does not wear masks. They are equal to all communities, within health matters. Are you serious? Have you not been reading anything put out by the actual science and medical community? Non-respirator masks do the most for preventing droplet and aerosols FROM the wearer and do less to protect the person wearing. Meaning that for it to work, all parties need to wear.

You can wear a N95 mask and go shopping in stores outside of Crown Heights- Trader Joes, Whole Foods, Food Town, there are many stores in NYC where everyone wears masks. There are steps you can take, to ensure your safety, but don’t put the burden on others.
It’s not about putting the burden on others. It’s about recognizing that whether you like it or not, what you do or don’t do DOES have an effect on other people.
Fact: you can only spread coronavirus if you have it. Most likely if you’re symptomatic e.g. cough or spit on someone else.
If you don’t have the coronavirus, what you do it don’t do DOESN’T have an effect on other people. The chance of you having asymptomatic coronavirus especially if you were careful to wash your hands and not lick contaminated surfaces is as close to 0 as possible in crown heights now.

I cannot understand why the beautiful residents of Crown Heights don’t get that at least 30% of us have not had coronavirus. An interesting observation, I read recently an article of a couple who were extremely careful about wearing masks, gloves, and using all kinds of sanitizer. Shockingly they somehow got the virus regardless of all their efforts. It’s unclear exactly how this virus moves around, and how long it lasts, but it may be the right thing for you to stay inside regardless of people wearing or not wearing masks…
If the people they were around didn’t wear masks they could still get it. Masks offer only limited protection for the wearer. That is why it’s incumbent upon all of us to do the right thing and wear masks to protect those around us.

In NYC, especially Crown Heights people currently infected with Covid-19 is almost zero. So since I am healthy and I know that I do not have Covid-19, what exactly is my wearing a mask or social distancing protecting you from? Would you wear a mask if you were the only one in your car? I assume no, because there’s no point. Well there’s no point in having healthy people wear masks in a store either. If they had Covid-19, they would be home.
There were 2,281 NEW Covid cases in New York City this past week. That’s about 325 cases a day. How is that zero?

A neighbor’s nasal swab came out positive but the more accurate blood test came back negative. The numbers of cases are highly inaccurate and are being used to scare the living daylight out of people. Some tests show positive when in touch with dead viral particals from months ago. We are being mislead by the politicians and ‘experts’ who have a financial incentive to prolong the fear and push for treatment that they will profit from.

Masks aren’t reliable enough and if everyone wore them it would give you a false sense of security.
So does that mean you go to trader joe and shop rite? Sounds like you don’t which means it doesn’t have to do with the masks at all. You are still fearful. Not sure what your solution is but it definitely shouldn’t be pointing fingers at others.

We live in a democracy. People must make the best health choices for themselves & their families. That may be a decision to isolate , wear a mask etc. However, if someone does not have any underlying conditions why should they isolate , wear a mask in the heat or any other restrictions?
It’s unfair? Life isn’t fair. We need to live. We need to work & we need a functioning economy.
In the absence of a vaccine you need herd immunity to allow you to live a normal life & meet me in the shopping isles.

Safe, effective early treatment is being suppressed. Useless, tyrannical mandates are being forced. Many needless deaths occurred because of outright negligence and malpractice by the city run hospitals… Just ask the hospital survivors if you want to hear the horror stories they experienced while unable to talk but fully cognitive. Add in the unnecessary deaths of the elderly at the nursing homes because of the governor’s mandate to accept covid infected patients there and you reach the level of premeditated murder.
