Were these coins really made from silver? The U.S. stopped using silver in our coins in 1965. Virtually no industrialized country puts silver in coins any more, it is simply too valuable and people simply hoard the coins (that happened here in 1965. When the new junk metal coins came out, the old silver coins disappeared completely within a few months. I remember that because my uncle A”H told us to save any coins from 1964 or earlier). My guess is these Lag B’Omer coins were silver colored but they used some base metal like copper or nickel…

I believe “Silver?” is correct that there the generally used US currency under $1.00 is no longer made with actual silver after 1964. But even today, the US Mint does produce more limited silver coinage, usually bought by collectors. Other mints around the world regularly make coins of silver. In fact, the US even minted replicas of the Congressional Gold Medal awarded to the Rebbe in silver as well. That took a lot longer…. As for the Lag B’Omer coin, I remember that story very well.
