In the ups and downs of the ongoing pandemic, many warn of a dark winter ahead. But with Yud Tes Kislev and Chanukah approaching, it is time to look for the light.
A new publication produced by the Menachem Education Foundation tells a different narrative about what has been happening in the world of Chabad Chinuch in the past year – and it is a story of triumph, resilience, transformation, and, yes, a bright future.
Over the past year, education has faced its most daunting crisis with nearly all elements of schooling turned on their head. When the whole world pressed pause, Chabad Chinuch pressed play. In Chinuch UnPaused, read about how countless educators turned crisis into opportunity, turning a dark situation around by bringing light into the lives of their students, whether in the classroom or at home. The in-depth exploration of what is happening in and out of Chabad classroom highlights the Changing Face of Student Engagement as educators adapt to evolving classrooms; how the Our Heritage Program turns Crisis to Opportunity, seizing the opportunity to welcome more children into Jewish Day Schools; and how educators prioritized Mental and Emotional Wellbeing During Covid-19.
Sit back and enjoy a book review answering Corona’s Big Question: Is Schooling Really Necessary; read numbers that are more optimistic than any you’ll find on the news in the Chinuch UnPaused Dashboard; and meet Partners on the Frontlines from across the Jewish community who have stepped up to the plate.

In 5746 (1986), Mr. and Mrs. Michoel Meir Goldhirsch contacted the Rebbe with an offer of a large donation intended to build a children’s hospital in Crown Heights. In response, the Rebbe replied that a better investment would be to designate the funds to support Torah-true Chinuch, which will, in turn, “ensure healthy children, physically, mentally, and spiritually”, negating the need for a hospital.
This message has been a rallying cry since the school shutdowns began. Along with following the Torah’s instructions to listen to doctors and take all precautions needed, we know that in whatever form, we can never press pause on Chinuch.
While this story unfolds, educators continue to play the role of essential workers and frontline responders for our children. When the Chinuch world emerges from this crisis, schools will need to come back stronger than ever. The Menachem Education Foundation is now gearing up for its annual matching Charidy Campaign, raising $500,000 now through Wednesday, Dec. 9 / 23 Kislev.
Read this story at mymef.org/magazine, and help MEF fuel the momentum of the Chabad Chinuch community so we can continue telling a story of the best possible Chinuch for all of our children, today and always.
