Hi,
I wanted to share with you a story that happened to me recently that I think it would be a nice thing for you to publish so people can benefit from the story.
For the last few years since I was learning Smicha I have been suffering from from a mild form of insomnia (which is a sleeping disorder which the person who is suffering has the inability to fall asleep or to stay a sleep as long as desired) where I periodically wake up in the middle of the night and I cant fall asleep again and the next day I am not able to function properly because of lack of sleep.
Over the last few months I have been waking up in the middle of the night more often than usual. About two weeks ago on a Motztie Shabbas I woke up around 2 o’clock in the morning and I wasn’t able to fall asleep. The next day I was learning around 3 pm in Yagdil Torah and I was struggling to stay awake from exhaustion. While I was trying to stay awake a certain individual named “Reb Yosef” (this isn’t is real name, just for purposes of remaining anonymous I changed his name) approached me by asking me why I was so tired, so I told him about my sleeping disorder.
He then gave me the following advice, he told me a story that there was a certain individual who was not having any success in his business, so the Rebbe asked him while his store is empty how does he occupy his time to which he responded that he either reads the local newspaper or listens to the news. The Rebbe then told him that if he would learn during the times when his shop is empty the Yeitzer Hara would send him customers in order that he shouldn’t be learning the whole day.
Therefore Reb Yosef told me that I should put a sefer by my bedside table so in cases when I am waiting to fall a sleep or I wake up in the middle of the night I should read from the sefer and since the Yeitzer Hara doesn’t want me to be awake the whole night learning that within 30 minutes he guaranteed that I would fall asleep. In short, I took his advice and for the last two weeks I have slept perfectly without any disturbances.
For last few weeks Reb Yosef has come up to me almost everyday asking me how the “prescription” is working, to which I have been able to respond happily that I haven’t felt this good in a long time. This morning Reb Yosef approached me requesting that I should publish this story so that other people who have the same problem can benefit from the advice that was giving to me.
Take care and sleep well,
Anonymous.
I think it might have been Chaim Shaul Brook. Anyone?
thats beautiful! love it thanks for sharing!!
Once I heard in a Farbrengen, don’t remember which Chassid was, but was a Chassid that fell bad every time he woke up in middle of the night for a restroom trip, to bring down his neshama just for that.. So he would think some lines of Tanya before he went back to sleep.
I have been suffering from sleeping disorders for years!
Thanks for posting this story, I will implement 🙂
…And BTW I love seeing storekeepers learning in their stores!
Thanks for all the positive comments, in regards to halacha I asked a Rav and he told me that you should do neigel vasser but in regards to saying brochas if you are just reading without verbally pronouncing the words you don’t have to do brachas (but double check with your own rav just in case I misunderstood the rav’s psak).
im most impressed by the caring Rabbi yosef who came over to you every day to ask how you slept???????!!!!!!!!!!!!
kein yirbu rabbi yosef{s like this in yeshivos!!
I was out of work and was eventually approached by someone asking if I would spend a few hours every day for pay putting tefillin on Yidden in a business area. There was a bonus amount for 1st timers. I agreed and was going to start right after the weekend. Before Monday came I got a full time job. So, the story makes perfect sense to me!
Love the business side of it.
If I’m not mistaken, the Frierdike Rebbe writes about thinking Tanya in one’s mind as a way of falling asleep. Further more, I’m almost certain that The Rebbe mentions this Segula several times in the Igros. Anyone?
i received the same advice from a mashpia in LA and its fool proof.
I think a likutei torah works best
Regarding getting up at night to learn – negel vasser? Morning brachas? etc..???
When I can’t fall asleep which happens pretty often, unfortunately… I either take melatonin or listen to a shiur I downloaded from Chabad.org. Just be careful- some speakers are really good that they’ll acutally keep u up. But for the most part, u fall asleep like a baby- I guess the Yetzer hara wants u sleeping as the author writes!
Melatonin is natural but Ambien is a prescription drug with known side affects and can be harmful. I like the learning Torah advice – only positive side effects!
Check out your thyroid!
I think under the pillow is maybe a bit unintentionally disrespectful…
Have you ever walked into a zal and noticed how many bochurim were sleeping?
Ambien & Melatonin also work well
for once there a positive op ed.
we need more of these posts, thank you!!!
Awesome!!
Thanks, I’ll try it out.
Any prescription for be being too tired, despite enough sleep?
I heard the advice of this writer said publicly years ago in Machon Alta by Rabbi Rosenfeld. He said it really works. Interesting though, it was on Lag B’Omer about 8 years ago when I walked into 770 and ended up desperately sharing with 2 women I didn’t even know that well that I had not been able to sleep every night for about the last 3 months and it was reaching havoc on my nerves etc….One of the ladies suggested I look at a picture of the Rebbe before going to sleep. Though I didn’t verbalize it, I decided… Read more »
