Hi Boys and Girls! Welcome back to “History’s Heroes” where we learn about our favorite Jewish Heroes and craft, paint, or experiment, along the way!
Highlight: Yehoshua
The first Mishna of Pirkei Avos recounts the Mesorah, stating that Moshe received the Torah at Sinai, and then handed it down to Yehoshua, who passed it on to the Zkeinim, and so on. While the Mishna summarizes specific aspects of the Mesorah, it does not include all the generations in between. This selective recounting serves to teach us the proper order for learning Torah: embracing the “Moshe within our souls,” the “Yehoshua within our souls,” and the “Zkeinim within our souls,” among others. What do these aspects represent? The “Moshe within us” symbolizes the humility and selflessness (Bitul) we must embody when studying the Torah. This leads us to the level of “Yehoshua within us.” Regarding Yehoshua, it is said that “he never moved from the tent,” which refers to Moshe’s tent, a space dedicated to Torah study. Our approach to Torah study should mirror this dedication, where we are fully immersed in our learning, “never moving from the tent of Torah.” This style of study is characterized by Kabbalas Ol—studying purely out of a desire to fulfill what Hashem wants from us.
Yehoshua was one of the two Meraglim who returned from Eretz Yisrael, praising Hashem for the wonderful land the Jewish people were about to enter. He specifically mentioned the Shivas Haminim, with which Hashem benched Eretz Yisrael. Get ready with clear glue to mimic resin and create a fabulous bookmark featuring the Shivas Haminim! Let the bookmark sparkle and shine, so you can easily find your place while learning from a sefer or enjoying a good book!
