The impending arrival of Tropical Storm Isaias led to a Tuesday morning tornado watch and flash flooding alerts across New York City and its suburbs as residents braced for heavy rains, whipping winds — and possibly worse.
The storm was churning north along the Eastern Seaboard, with the National Weather Service warning Isaias will arrive with “conditions favorable for a tornado to form.” The tornado watch, stretching from Atlantic City to Norwich, Conn., is in effect until 4 p.m. as winds of 45 to 55 mph and gusts of up to 75 mph are anticipated.
Flooding is possible through early Wednesday morning, with heavy rain expected to continue into the evening across the five boroughs, northeast New Jersey and the Lower Hudson Valley, according to a National Weather Service alert.
COLlive has received reports of downed trees on Montgomery and Crown Streets as well as Kingston Avenue in Crown Heights.
Thank G-d we have not received reports of any injuries.
At 1:00 PM, Con Edison has notified that they are responding to numerous power outages across NYC.
Residents should use extreme caution, as the brunt of the rain and wind is still yet to come in the afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service.
The City has notified that there are damaged trees on streets and in parks throughout NYC. Forestry crews and emergency personnel are working to address the damage, they said.
New Yorkers should exercise caution when traveling, avoid entering parks and hazardous areas during storms, and report locations of downed trees and tree limbs by contacting 3-1-1 (212-639-9675 for Video Relay Service, or TTY 212-504-4115) or NYC.gov/311.
