A large crowd attended the funeral of Rabbi Avraham Lider, a pillar of kindness in the Crown Heights community, who dedicated his life to helping others.
He passed away suddenly on Rosh Hashana at the age of 61 after a heart attack.
Hundreds gathered at 770 Eastern Parkway for the heartbreaking funeral, so many recounting stories of when Rabbi Lider had helped them or a family member.
Rabbi Lider was the founder of the Ahavas Chesed organization, which over the years has helped thousands of Jews from various backgrounds, with Rabbi Lider doing volunteer work himself. During the recent pandemic, Rabbi Lider worked round the clock, assisting hundreds of patients at various hospitals, connecting families with doctors, and even delivering packages to patients from their worried families while hospitals were on lockdown and not allowing any visitors.
Rabbi Lider was also instrumental in organizing blood plasma drives in Crown Heights, where hundreds of coronavirus survivors donated blood to be shipped all over the US to help coronavirus patients.
Rabbi Lider’s passing leaves a huge void in the Crown Heights community, devastating shocked family, friends, and countless people whom he has helped throughout the years.
New York Attorney General Letitia James has released the following statement on the passing of Rabbi Lider:
“I am deeply saddened by the loss of Rabbi Avraham Lider and I extend my condolences to the Lider family and the entire Crown Heights community during this difficult time. Rabbi Lider was not only a great spiritual leader, but also a community leader who dedicated his life to helping those around him.
Over the years, his organization provided critical health care and services to so many, and more recently, as our city was overwhelmed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Rabbi Lider worked tirelessly to provide care and support to families in need. In Jewish tradition, it is believed that the most righteous among us die on Rosh Hashanah because their contributions and guidance were needed until the very end. It is clear that Rabbi Lider gave so much to our communities and he will be dearly missed. May his memory be a blessing.”
He is survived by his wife, Tema and children Dovid Lider – Crown Heights, Naftoli Lider – Crown Heights, Shmuly Lider – Crown Heights, Malky Janowsky – Toronto, and Bassie Lider – Crown Heights.
He is also survived by his siblings, Shlomo Lider – Williamsburg, NY, Yaakov Lider – Melbourne, Nechama Brichter – Jerusalem, Malka Kaplan – Jerusalem, Israel, and Yehuda Lider – Jerusalem, Israel.
Shiva will take place at 720 Lefferts Avenue.
