More than 800 people gathered three weeks ago as Hatzolah Melbourne marked 30 years of lifesaving service at a landmark Gala Dinner, bringing together volunteers, supporters, community leaders and emergency services representatives for an inspiring evening of tribute and celebration.
Founded in the mid-1990s by a small group of dedicated volunteers, Hatzolah Melbourne has grown into a highly trained, 24-hour emergency medical response service working in close partnership with Ambulance Victoria and attending thousands of calls each year.
The evening was MC’d by Responder Mr Joel Arber, who guided the program with warmth and professionalism. Rabbi Josh Wonder, General Manager of Hatzolah Melbourne, reflected on the organization’s humble beginnings, remarkable growth and the devotion of its volunteer responders and their families.
Rabbi Kohn, Moreh D’Asra of Adass Yisroel and Hatzolah Rabbi, spoke about the halachic and moral significance of pikuach nefesh, while responder Rabbi Shmuel Karnowsky delivered the D’var Torah, inspiring the audience with reflections on chessed and the spiritual power of saving lives.
A major highlight of the night was the official launch of the new Hatzolah “Code Blue” Project by Mr Mark Gandur, signaling an exciting expansion of Hatzolah’s rapid-response capabilities across Melbourne.
Throughout the evening, emotional tributes honoured founding members and long-serving volunteers, with a stirring standing ovation paid to the many responders who have given their time in service of others.
In addition to emergency response, guests reflected on Hatzolah Melbourne’s expanded community role through free CPR and first aid training, falls-prevention programs and wider wellbeing initiatives.
As Hatzolah Melbourne enters its fourth decade, the Gala Dinner served as a powerful reminder of the impact of unity, dedication and selfless service in saving lives.
