During these days when we practice the Kaporos, students in Oholei Torah from grades 4 – 6 had a live hands-on experience in Shechita and Kashering a chicken.
This program, initiated years ago by Rabbi Shlomo Furterfas, gave the talmidim an opportunity to learn and see the various laws and how shechita is done. Three chickens which were previously used for kaporoes were schechted by Rabbi Pinchus Rapoport, and then kashered, cleaned.
The talmidim also saw the various chalofim, special shechita knives and the special care they are given to make sure if their kashrus level.
After the chickens were properly prepared and cleaned, chosen talmidim were then able to take home a quarter of a chicken of which they took part in of its preparation.
Rabbi Yehoshua Lustig, Principal, said that in connection with kaporos, we use the opportunity to give the talmidim an exciting hands on class is shechita and kashrus.
i once held a chicken while the shochet was shechting it!
Let’s sponsor it!
“tastes like chicken”!!!!!!!!!
I watched kappores when I was six. I didn’t eat chicken for three years. Good move but I think the kids are a little young for it. Maybe at Mesifta age.
my son loved the experience! he couldn’t wait for “his” chicken to cook! and he actually finished his entire supper that night! that alone was worth it!
Thank you R’ Rapoport and R” Futerfas. Shmulik is lucky to have you both.
You are great parents and a grate inspiration for the melamdim of your children, thank you for your kind wards.
Parents of students there thought it was great. Those not there think too graphic. Hmmm..
He was amazed and it made the whole concept of schita and how the live chicken gets to the table so real for him and he was NOT traumatized even though he is a very sensitive child. Its all in the presentation and attitude. Adults are more terrified of this than kids.
the kids that were afraid left for the Shchita part. They were encouraged to do so.
ok this is strange. next they will bring a newborn, 8 days old…. ok i went extream but not so far off. this makes me sad.
yeshar coach Rabbi Futerfas and Rabbi Rappaprt .its a great experience for our children ..kol hacavod!
Look at the kid behind R rappaport, dosn’t he look terrified ?
when I was 11 0r 12 I “wached ” Shchitah by Kaparos for the first time. I remember i was pale and nautious and couldn’t fall asleep. My son is 8 in OT. knowing him, 9 yrs old is way too young for such “chinuch projects”.
I suggest it for bochurim learning Yoreh Deah…
Agreed I think this was not a wonderful activity for children so young.
they never had that when i was Thar
My son’s class had a lesson in wine making. All these additional programs enhance our children’s chinuch. Thank you and please present more real life lessons to our children.
It’s nice for a Yeshiav to look for opprtunities to give students hands on experience. However kids today have enough to give them nightmares they should’t get together for something like this. Kashrus should be taught under other circumstances and Shichata may will learned when they do smicha.
isn’t 9 a little young??? shouldnt there be an age limit of when this is too early to show, whats next mila?
Maybe they can make another demonstration, they were left over Yom Kippur, if there not dead yet, they can be useful for a needy family instead of being left there. Is the person that did Kapporos on them even Yoitzeh if the chix were not Shechted?
Got Chiken-Can they travel? All schools can benefit from this especially high schools!
My 9 year old enjoyed the program, and even brought home a piece of the kashered chicken to cook and eat.
