What’s better than learning Hilchos Shabbos from a wonderful Halacha teacher?
Having experts in areas of specialty show us practically how the intricate laws of Shabbos can be applied. So, Bnos Chomesh’s Halacha teacher suggested inviting some guest speakers to enhance her classes on Hilchos Shabbos.
First, the school welcomed Hatzalah member Shlomo Galatz, who enlightened the students about emergency protocol on Shabbos. Through share piskei halacha and stories in which Shlomo was personally involved (no names of course!), the students got a practical understanding of the Mitzvah “Pikuach Nefesh Doicheh Shabbos.”
“I was surprised to learn that when something muktzah has to be done on Shabbos and there are a few people in the room who can do it, the most important person in the room is supposed to do it!” said one student.
“I didn’t realize how many things a person is supposed to do for a baby on Shabbos that you might think are problematic,” shared Ita Brownstein, an 11th grader.
But Practical Shabbos 101 didn’t end there. While learning about the melacha of Tzoveya—coloring—Miss Krasnianski had another brainstorm: bring in a makeup artist to show the students how makeup falls under this melacha, and have her teach how to put on long lasting makeup before Shabbos in order to avoid the need for makeup on Shabbos. Fortunately, Bnos Chomesh’s very own Necha Wolowik, head of Bnos Chabad, also doubles as a makeup artist! There was no shortage of willing models as Necha cheerfully demonstrated techniques that really work and create a beautiful look that lasts from licht bentchen to havdala!
Future programs include “Blech Use for Frummies” with a side of pulled beef cholent for lunch and an “Un-Chopped” competition to review the Halachos of Toichen, Borer, and other laws that pertain to preparing salads for Shabbos.
“Learning Hilchos Shabbos is greatly enhanced by the addition of these practical elements,” says Mrs. Dena Gorkin, Principal of Bnos Chomesh. “Our creative staff is constantly coming up with great ways of making learning more down to earth and relatable.”
Happy birthday Necha
