At the intersection, take a right on Alter Rebbe…
The city of Haditch in the Poltava province in the central-east part of Ukraine has voted in favor of naming a street to honor the memory of Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi, the founder and first Rebbe of Chabad-Lubavitch movement.
A crowd of 22 people was present at city hall on Monday to vote on renaming the street leading to the Ohel resting place of the Alter Rebbe, as he was known, which for 2 centuries has drawn Jews to the city.
Visitors from around the world come to Haditch to pray at the Ohel on special occasions connected to the Alter Rebbe’s life – his redemption on the 19th of Kislev, passing on the 24th of Teves and birthday on the 18th of Elul – and year-round.
This past Pesach, the Kiryas Rabbeinu Hagadol organization which oversees activity at the Ohel, hosted Jewish families from out of the county for Seders and davening at its synagogue and Aishel motel.
At the meeting for the renaming of the street to Alter Rebbe, 17 people voted in favor, while 3 were against and 2 abstained votes, according to Rabbi Shneur Zalman Deitch, Director of Kiryas Rabbeinu Hagadol.
Volodimir Nesterenko, Mayor of the Hadiach City Council, supported the measure. He called the Alter Rebbe a “holy man” who wrote the book of Tanya “which has become one of the biggest breakthroughs” in Jewish life.

Thought we don’t name after Rebbes. The reason we didn’t do shcneerson square in CH….
doesn’t make sense they would decide on their own to name after Rebbe!
. כִּי גָבַר עָלֵינוּ, חַסְדּוֹ; וֶאֱמֶת-ה’ לְעוֹלָם; הַלְלוּ-יָה.
While Chabad mingag is against this, it is their citizen decision, not Chabad. Well, they are thankfull for all the currence flowing to them with all the foreign visitors, which is not a bad thing.
