Gymies has been getting little ones moving for five years now. What may come as a surprise to you is that Gymies has a well kept secret. In the bright classrooms downstairs, two bustling groups of children are very busy exploring and learning in the Gymies Creative Arts Preschool.
“What sets this preschool apart is its creative approach. Movement and Art is an integral part of the curriculum because it provides children with more opportunities to be successful in the school environment and boasts self confidence from a ripe young age,” says Gymies Director and Founder Sarah C Benarroch.
“Parents always want the best for their kids, especially opportunities to excel and grow their sense of self. Here, it’s what we’re all about. We give you that opportunity.”
In an effort to give that opportunity to more children, this year Gymies will be opening two scholarship spots for half-tuition.
“Gymies has seen a steady addition of new programs since 2008, and this past school year was all about the Preschool. We did a total overhaul, from curriculum, staffing, classroom materials to taking a hard look at why we do what we do; we went over it all,” says Benarroch. “The results have been beautiful to watch, with both our 2’s and 3’s class moving up and graduating this Spring.”
So what are some activities that you would see on a typical day at our Creative Arts Preschool?
In our two’s classroom you may see the children playing with beads or rice in the sensory tub, painting on our big art wall or sorting colored aleph-bais flash cards on the carpet; or perhaps they are in an imaginary forest with their Yoga teacher. In our three’s classroom you may see children dressing up in the dramatic play area, practicing their pre-literacy skills by tracing the letters of their names (think Aleph-bais and the alphabet), learning about ingredients and taking turns to pass the bowl when making cheesecake for Shavuos. Or they might be in a Soccer session in the Gym.
Throughout the day you may find children eating snack and lunch ‘family style’, playing at the outside waterwall, or swinging themselves on the rings. Other activities include practical life experiences such as washing and cleaning up or Shabbos party at the end of the week.
Our team was hand picked and trained by our early education consultant Bryna Leider, formerly of Bais Rivka Head Start Preschool and currently of Luria Academy. Devorah Leah Milecki of Sydney Australia, whose background is in Visual Arts and Special Education, is the lead teacher.
“The curriculum is full and vibrant, integrating Chabad philosophy with creative and discovery based learning. We have scheduled Davening time and circle time, where we learn Parsha and develop pre-literacy and math skills,” says Devorah Lea. “We also have sessions for Art and Movement, and center time for independent learning and play.”
Devorah Leah is complemented by a fabulous group of loving, experienced and creative teachers who bring excitement, warmth and innovative learning to the classroom.
The Gymies Creative Arts Preschool is hosting an OPEN HOUSE this Sunday June 15th from 10am – 12pm.
