Surveillance video showing Jewish millionaire and philanthropist Guma Aguiar before he went missing might indicate his state of mind and raise the hopes of his family and friends.
The footage released by Fort Lauderdale police shows Aguiar exiting the front door of his mansion in the upscale Rio Vista neighborhood and walking back and forth in his front yard.
Filmed on Tuesday, June 19 at around 6:30pm, the video then shows him getting onto his small fishing boat “T.T. Zion,” sailing off alone in the dark skies.
The Brazilian-born businessman made millions in oil and gas interests at a young age and divided his time between South Florida and Israel. He planned to redesign his flat overlooking the Kotel in Jerusalem to resemble 770 Eastern Parkway.
Investigators say this video gives them a crucial clue, reported Ted Scouten of CBS Miami. The U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search on Thursday, but the police investigation continues.
But people close to Aguiar are not giving up hope.
“What is left for us to do is pray for a miracle,” said Rabbi Moshe Meir Lipszyc, Director of Chabad Lubavitch of Fort Lauderdale, where Aguiar was a regular.
“We are all worried for his well being. We hope that if he fell from his boat he would be able to swim on his own to one of the shores. He is a strong fellow and with Hashem’s help and our prayers we hope he will be fine,” Lipszyc added.
His mother Ellen Aguiar said that in addition to being bipolar, Guma was under tremendous pressures that would not cease, but did not elaborate as to its cause.
